My Newfoundland is getting a bit stiff. She is 6 1/2. Is there any harm in trying cod liver oil +/- condriotin human strength? Will obviously run by vet as well , but just wondered if anyone had any thoughts?

I give my Dobes human strength cod liver oil tablets from Tesco, Holland & Barrett or Lidls which ever is cheaper. I have a greyhound who stays with me and she is on the same one a day.

If your Newfie is a bit stiff I would be looking to get something stronger from your vet.

I have looked all over the internet and cannot see any adverse affects to cod liver oil in fact lots of pet suppliers sell it

Salmon oil might be better for them but is very expensive..

Thanks. She is now on Fish4dogs....or gradually transferring her across and vaguely remember seeing the salmon oil so may try that. Just stiff when she gets up and then fine as she exercises. Will speak to vet. Thanks.

Hi have just realised it was vitamin a that codliver oil is high in I think, and it can lead to an overdose of vitamin A,m the results of which are :

Birth defects
Liver problems
Reduced bone mineral density that may result in osteoporosis
Coarse bone growths
Skin discoloration
Hair loss
Excessive skin dryness/peeling (desquamation)
Angular cheilitis
Intracranial hypertension (see Idiopathic intracranial hypertension[1])

well that is in humans but it has a bad effect on dogs. I will havew a chat with my vet and let you know exactly why she was adamant I didn;t use it
