The "every owner should read this" thread was amusing, haven't we all met these horses at some time or other, but (while mucking out as usual) I was thinking WHY?

Wy isn't it possible to go out and buy a well manner horse that will do the job that you want it to. That is schooled to go, stop and turn. Will go out by itself, will be normal?

Who is at fault? Is it the person selling or people buying unsuitable horses in the first place?

If the horse for sale would actually do those things and be pleasantly mannered, then I think less would wind up for sale!!

There seems to be very few people about who have the skill to school and produce horses properly. People go to try a horse lets say at a dealers yard, horse is well mannered, nice, responsive ride. Get it home and a month down the line its rude on the ground, nappy in the school etc and they immediately blame the horse. When all that has happened is the horse has gone from being handled and ridden by competent people daily to someone that just lets them get away with things without even realizing it. I have seen this happen so many times.

People just aren't as competent as they think they are then would rather blame the horse and sell rather than asking for help, trying to improve themselves and learn how to deal with it.

Of course I'm not saying this is the case for every horse on the market, it just does happen a lot, and then they buy the next one and wonder why the same thing happens again.

It does shock me how blatantly people will lie when trying to sell. There's a horse I know very well from being on yards and it was advertised for sale as 'never stopped at a fence', yeh right! They also failed to mention the numerous soundness and back problems it had so it would've been a wasted journey for anyone going to view as it would not pass any vetting. Funnily enough it hasn't sold.
