I dont know whether it has anything to do with the time of year, but Ellie seems to be constantly hungry at the moment! Normally she eats lots of hay at night but only half the same amount during the day - if you give her too much in the daytime it gets churned up into her bed......

But for the last three or four days, she has been absolutely ravenous when I go to give her more - I let her in the yard whilst I muck out, and whereas normally she is content to wander around, at the moment she will not settle until I let her back in to eat her fresh hay! And if you show her a scoop of pony nuts, she nearly bites your arm off to get to them! She is not at all skinny; in fact she is probably carrying more weight at the moment because I'm not managing to ride as much as I would like; also I have not changed her feed or the amount she is getting or anything. She just seems permanently hungry! Yet another chapter in the chronicles of my strange horse I guess!

Is this something anyone else has found recently?

Could be she's cold or in season? Also could be she's a mare... my mare is the sweetest thing in the world until u get between her and her food....

I'm hoping the season was over and done with last week....although sometimes she seems permanently in season so I wont hold my breath! She's nice and snug under three rugs as well, so shouldnt be chilly....I think it's another case of blame-it-on-the-gender; bless her, I seem to be doing that a lot recently!

It's interesting to read this, there's a TB on the yard who is a notoriously fussy feeder, he'll sometimes go days without touching his hard feed, it's just him! The last ten days or so though he's been ravenous, eating everything in sight, we put it down to the better weather, slightly longer turnout and burning more energy as they are all charging around more, enjoying the drier ground and sunshine. I'm sure he'll be back to normal soon, he just does this from time to time! Not sure if that's any help really

oh it does help; its good to know Ellie is not completely abnormal! LOL! She is normally quite fussy too - there are some days she will barely touch her hay, and others where, like at the moment, she will devour it all within minutes! I think the changing weather and season probably have a lot to do with it!

I got the same with our welsh pony at the moment,so i have upped her feed and i am giving her more fibrebeet as well, but i got to be careful because once that lush grass comes through she goes very very fat more and less over night ...and then i got a problem the other way..Cant win with those horses

Wierd cos mine are the opposite at the mo. They are still polishing off their hard feed but not getting through nearly as much haylage at night, I even had to chuck out a load this morning and I hate waste

I reckon my grass must be coming through quicker than it looks!
