I moved house and thus hunts about 8 years ago. Since then have hunted with various different packs and had 6 days subs with old pack and new pack, and I've always kept my hunt buttons from the old hunt on my coat. This season is my first full sub with the "new" pack. Shall I take my buttons off? I was just about to sit down to cut them all off and sew plain ones on, but suddenly seemed like a bit of a shame, plus it will take me at least an hour as I am useless at sewing!

What would be the right thing to do?

Thank you!

I was grilling out former master on this and he said in the event of moving to a new pack and subscribing with them then it was correct to remove collar and buttons until invited to wear buttons of new pack. Sorry

2 against 1. Obviously I feel you are right claire and tractor otherwise I wouldn't have asked. But thank you Hunters, you have made me feel not quite so bad as I will have them on today as no time to change them now! Fortunately no collar to change, so I might just do the back ones now then I'm half way there!

I had my old hunt buttons on my coat for 4 seasons with new hunt before being given my new buttons and collar and only changed them when given the new ones.

I believe if you've earned the old ones, continue to wear them until you are given your new ones.

Never been told otherwise.

I've recently moved to a new hunt as a hunting farmer, will I ever be afforded the privilege of being able to wear hunt buttons or are hunting farmers not considered the same as subscribers? How long do you normally have to be a member of a hunt to 'qualify'? It's always been something i have aspired to...

As far as I am aware those on farmers' subscriptions are able to qualify for their hunt buttons. My friend was awarded hers at the end of last season.

There isn't a time qualification as such, but they will be awarded for being useful in the running of the hunt - both on the hunting and field and off it. I was awarded mine in January because although I do not ride regularly I help out at almost every event, organise fund raisers, re-started the hunt magazine, and used my annual leave to work with Vote Okay during two general elections.

Sometimes they can also be awarded for acts of impressive and unselfish bravery too - a 17 year old in our hunt who galloped onto a main road to catch a loose horse before it caused a serious accident was awarded hers.

I agree I am of the understanding that you can wear any buttons to any hunt as i know people who have.

thanks all for the interest.

I asked him last season when I subscribed to both, and he gave it no thought and said fine. I had a good chat to him on Tues and forgot to ask! Suffice to say he could have told me if he'd noticed and not been happy. He doesn't seem the type to worry too much about things like that - too busy worrying about getting the money in! No doubt it will be the "hunt harridan" who raises her eyebrows at me! I noticed there are a couple of others who are still wearing buttons and collars from other packs, and no one has ever been bothered.

I think its always nice to see different hunt buttons as long as the wearer is the person who had earned or was awarded them.

As previous it's probably not strictly correct to wear them but I would hope / expect certainly allowable.

As has also been raised if you subscribe to two hunts then it would be expected to be able to do this with one coat!

I don't however approve of people falling out with their hunt then riding elsewhere with the old button but happilly "slagging" off the hunt the buttons relate to. At this point please remove them.

The advice to contact the hunt secretary is probably best as I suspect the view may vary from hunt to hunt. As a sec, if someone came to me I'd say go ahead and wear them, you've earned them, be proud of them :D

I earned my hunt button with one hunt and now I hunt with another after moving. There's no way I would cut off them off though. I'm proud I was given them and proud to wear them.
