Always a hat with a strap. Mines a Charles Owen, the more expensive one with flesh coloured straps. (Always say I'd be very ill if my flesh was that colour, though!).

I hit a tree on Tuesday, hard enough to spend the next day strapped to a back board in hospital. If I hadn't had a chin strap on I would not have kept my hat on.
Your brains are more important than your looks. (Mind, when I was single I worse a beagler, and now I'm married to the terrierman, lol!!).

Patey cap all the way. If id hit a tree it would not of come off. Mine is made to measure & I struggle to remove it with my hands let alone anything else.

If you want a good, well fitting beagler, then Pateys are definitely the way to go. Charles Owen do nice beaglers too, but they might not fit as well.

They'll stay on but not sure if they will if/when you fall. If you want to wear a beagler I'd say go for the real deal, it will last you a lifetime for that money anyway!

I like the look of hunt caps but after my experiences out hunting on Tuesday I will never hunt in one again. My horse is normally a donkey but did not stop him rearing up over backwards and I know I would have lost a beagler so am very pleased I had a skull on. I also have a CO SJ 2000 with leather straps and that is nice and I am very vain about hats.

If I had some spare funds I would ivest in a Patey- I watched the most horrific fall with one of our fieldmasters this time, everything came crashing down but tht Patey stayed on.

The Patey might stay on, but it won't protect your head apart from stopping you getting superficial injuries (cuts etc). I show in a beagler, but there's no way I'd hunt without an up to standard hat (of whatever kind - I have a CO with flesh harness), it's much more dangerous, and I've seen some horrific accidents out hunting with people kicked in the head as they fall off etc

My biggest problem is the fixed peaks- I actually deteste fixed peaks- when I fell off at home and landed face first the peak came back into my nose and broke it- would have been safer in a skull.

I rarely fall off it takes a monumental effort to shift me and what happened last tuesday was the first time that has ever happened. I had several people watching and they all thought I was going to have to be airlifted off but I walked away fine this time. It only takes one accident to happen and is it really fair on your family when it could have been prevented? I am as vain as the next person as do not wear a body protector unless compulsory but the body is a lot better protected than your head.

Because of the specially designed padding of a hat that's up to standard which are rigorously tested. A patey or beagler is like having a layer of plastic over your head, it gives very minimal protection, but won't cushion the blow if you fall. If any hat is ok as long as it stays on, why is it that if you put a strap on a beagler it's not up to safety standards? - it's becaue of the specialised design and padding.

"I suspect you've not got so far to fall? "

A fall with us could be a damm sight futher than 17 hands , Wanthwaite crag about 400 ft straight down , so what difference a safety hat ???

A patey doesn't really offer any more protection than a beagler, except being more likely to stay on. They're slightly sturdier but still without padding, so won't protect you nearly as much as a proper standard hat.

It's totally up to you what you wear on your head though, it's your head. I choose to wear a beagler (or top hat if needed) when showing, but know they aren't going to offer me a fraction of the protection my skull cap or harnessed hat would.
