Horrible topic I know, but can anyone recommend a hunt or knackerman service for PTS and disposal, covering the Bucks/Herts border please.

(Hopefully won't be needed for some time, but realised I should have a number to hand as a 'just in case of emergencies' as much as for if it is needed if she doesn't come sound anyway)

We have used Mr Courtney. He was lovely.
Contact number is 01525 8735952

My friend (Holidayhorse) raves about Tom Courtenay.

A lady on my yard says Holts is amazing. If you want, they recycle to Paradise Wildlife park (if you request it). I’m aware this isn’t what many people want, so I’m really sorry if that’s offensive.

Paradise wildlife park is amazing! We have done a few of their experiences there, including feed the tigers. They use horse meat for that, and told us that many local owners choose the beloved horses to go there and be used (obviously if there are no drugs involved at any stage), rather than the alternatives.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience Cowparsley. However, my vets use Grafton and I've found them to be fine to deal with. My vet deals with the whole process - ordering the collection, paying the company etc, and then invoices after a longer than usual period)

I used Grafton just before Christmas and it was all very quick and kind. I opted for them to shoot as I didn't want to have to coordinate two different people in addition to manage when other owners weren't around and other horses were out. Plus my gelding always hated being sedated so I figured it was quicker and kinder for him which was the case. His last moments were not fighting sedation but eating in a field that wasn't usually grazed and had knee deep grass. There were different options to tick (disposal, group cremation, individual cremation). I chose the first as it makes sense to me to use rather than cremate but that is just a personal view and you can tick another.

I probably would have used Holts as they are more local, yard is just round the corner from Paradise Animal Park and I would have opted for that but my ym had taken against them as when they collected a pony that had died, the van that came wasn't empty and already had another horse in it. It wasn't worth the hassle it would have caused.

I've heard of people getting upset about this before, and I don't understand it at all! As far as I'm concerned, once the horse has been PTS, it's not my horse any more - it's a body. I can't imagine why anyone would think it's viable for the knackerman to do individual trips for every horse they pick up, and who isn't going to be aware that it has company on its final journey.
I simply don't stick around for removal, so have no idea what's already on the truck - nor do I care.

I agree with you but it's a sensitive time and there are all sorts of emotions that may not be logical but are entirely understandable.

For me as soon as it was done it was clear that Frankie wasn't there anymore, I showed my other gelding who was very bonded and then got out of sight until I saw the van disappearing up the drive. Getting 600kg of fat tb on a van isn't going to be dignified and I didn't need to see that.

While it wouldn't worry me for a collection, for PTS I might be concerned that my horse would sense what was in the van and be spooked and might ask but in this case it was just easier to use someone else than to hear someone criticising my choice constantly.

I agree - it's a subjective thing. I guess it all boils down to what makes things most bearable for the owner of the horse that's just been PTS

Thankyou. It's useful to have some different recommendations and first hand feedback, it's appreciated.

When I had my old boy pts I believe it was an empty trailer but I didn't hang around to find out! It was also 6am so I guess it's unlikely to have had anything else in there.

Although I'm of the thought once she's gone she's gone and don't really mind what happens to her body/wouldn't want ashes back, I do feel a bit funny about the thought of her being used to feed animals. Not very logical though I know. She's also had various meds so wouldn't be suitable. But thankyou for mentioning the option - it may be useful for anyone else reading this thread at any point.

my best friend of 20 years went on ‘the truck’ With a little tiny donkey that someone not far from me had just lost. I found it strangely comforting that she wasn’t rattling around in the van on her own. But everyone is different
