Good luck. You'll need the hide of a rhinoceros and the tact of a diplomat plus a memory like an elephant but you will have a lot of fun too I'm sure so enjoy it.
Good job for me then that I'm single!
I was Treasurer last year which I am carrying temporarily as we have been unable to find anyone else, so busy times for me.
Luckily (or maybe not) my boss is senior master so I do have her there to help me out!
I've just resigned after 8 years as secretary. I was 21 when I took the job on.
It's amazing fun, you will speak to hundreds of people, at all times of day and night. You will need to be good at giving directions.
One bit of advice that helped me a lot - unless the hunt are going to provide you with a phone, then put a time on your voicemail message for people to call you back - ie "hi this is xxx. Thank you for calling, sorry I have missed your call. If you are calling about hunting, please call back after 6pm" - saves your phone bill ringing them all back!
Always reply to everything you get, take a pen and paper in your pocket everywhere (I have a rubbish memory) as people will tell you important things at the most random of times.
Finally, don't get drunk on Christmas Day - you still need to be able to have a sensible conversation about the best place to park for Boxng Day!!
Thanks for the advice Tractor.
hmm directions aren't my strong point and we have huge country and I don't know the north east part of it at all, it's part of our Tuesday country and until now I've not been able to have a Tuesday off before (obviously the boss get's priority)
Just had my first phone call at 7.30 this morning, luckily I was up just finishing milking!
I like the voicemail idea, unfortunately when I'm home I don't get alot of signal and I'm certainly not about to put the landline out for all to use only people who need it have that.
I have set up an email so that it's separate from my personal one, that way things don't get lost amoungst YFC stuff.
The pen and paper is a good idea will put it in my saddle bag! Along with the very important sweeties!!
Fortunately I always milk Xmas day so that I can hunt boxing day and I hate going out New Years Eve so won't have a headache NY day either!
Atleast my boss will be understanding and will be able to help me out alot.
1 thing I have learnt in her time as master and even more so doing Treasurer is that you don't realise what is involved until you see it first hand. If only more people made the effort to find out they might appreciate masters/ officers alot more
OMG poor you - not both wrists !!!!! dont want to ask who helps you shower and go to the loo if you dont have OH.
On the upside, I broke my wrist a few years back (was prob 30 ish at time - crushed against gatepost by friends horse as it jumped back into field over my head) and I only had the plaster on for 5-6 weeks - they wanted to leave it on longer but I said to take if off as xmas was approaching. .... It was also suprisingly easy to balance a wheelbarrow on it as well which meant I could still muck out etc. Had no problems with wrist afterwards either.
yep both wrist's - left 1 has been plated, right has wires in. going to be in a cast for 6 weeks then physio after, i work on a farm and they think i'm going to be off for upto 12 weeks.
no idea what spooked her, boss was in front of me and didn't know anything was happening until it was 2 late!
just can't believe that i finally get a season where my days off mean i can hunt 3 out of 4 days over a fortnight and i can't ride. never mind will have to become a footy!
Ouchy, sounds like you made a good job of it too then if they've plated/wired them!!
it could be worse though! my friend got kicked (double barrelled) by a horse this morning as she was leading it out, and has fractured her leg in two places! She's got 5 horses at hunting fitness and 2 pointers.... and no full time help and no rider!!
