i have never been hunting before in my life but would love to try it out as a 21st birthday present as i know its quite expensive. I was thinking of finding a hireling and talking to the hunt steward etc. but i really am quite clueless so any advice suggestion would be most grateful ie. etiquette, good friendly places to go (i live in the north west), hireling with good reputation etc.

I can't really help with Hireling's in your area, but I'm sure if you speak to the hunt sec they'll be able to help!

as for etiquette, there's plenty to be read on here, especially on the stickies at the top! But if there's anything specific you want to know just ask!

You could ask the local hunts if they have a newcomers day. It is quite often foc and some people lend their horses to newcomers so they can experience a day. Only trouble is they are usually at the beginning of the season so you might have to wait until October or November.

Personally I wouldn't go on a newcomers day! With the majority being newcomers it's often hectic and a very rough. I avoid the day at all costs now having been wiped out twice by newcomers last year. I would email or phone the hunt sectretary they will be able to advise on hirelings and also the best meet for you to attend.

Hope you have a fantastic day when you do get there!

edited to add: are you a british riding club member? often you can get hunt tickets from your riding club for almost half price caps (the money you pay to go).
