Have finally decided it's time i invested in a decent hunt crop/whip especially since it learnt it's a lot easier to hook a gate with one rather than struggle leaning down! (i'm a late learner okay!) ;)

I've seen a few second hand whips which look very nice but i'm struggling a bit on a few things as never had to buy one before.
Do they come in gents/ladies (didn't know if it was determined by length/weight you see) and roughly what is a good price for a secondhand crop? The ones i've seen are around the £65-80 mark?

Sorry this is a bit dim but i usually just struggle along with normal jump whips.

i've just sold a ladies cane hunt whip inc new lash and thong for £30 on ebay! bit gutted it went that low but hey-ho - at least it will be used as was just a spare that never got touched!

After having a bit more of a nosey i can see that the unbranded ones seem to be around the £20-40 mark and the Swaines are the ones making the £70+ money. It's all a bit of a minefield for me really

Where have you found them for £20-£40? I have been trying to pick up a cheap one for ages and although they start at around that price on ebay they always rocket at the last minute. Ladies whips are shorter than gents.

get in touch with David Thorne in Lapford Devon. he has a brilliant website. i've dealt with him for years, he makes everthing himself- gents, ladies, mends whatever and is very quick and a beautiful job done, at a reasonable expense. i ordered a lash for my whip's thong, arrived in a couple of days. can't praise him high enough-

Absolutely could not agree more with the above- just bought OH servants & brown whips from David Throne, who also had them personalized too- they are bloody awesome and I am certain will last a lifetime.

I like to handle a whip so that I know how they balance in my hand (and therefore what they are going to be like during a day's hunting). I prefer my very antique gent's whip for this reason to the lady's whip which I was given for my 21st.

I'm the same, and the old gents whip I paid £15 for (in very bad nick when I got it) is much more comfortable for me than the lighter, slimmer ladies whip I have. The Balance of the whip is crucial to how easy it is to hold.
