Are there any reputable hunter breeders? im looking for something 2-5 years old - that has the size of a hunter - a weight carrying horse with athleticism.

Not into paying over the odds simply as it is called a 'hunter'.

Something around the the 2k mark especially if it is a 2-3 year old and not even backed.

Any links or contacts would be welcome - please PM.

good hunter types, which are bred for their bone and quality and function will always carry a premium price. 2k you might get an overgrown weighty type but might not be quality. go to the sales in ireland or in england and bid on what you fancy.

David Guilding in Gloucestershire (Berkeley). Usually by his own stallion Lake Street Envoy (Welton Lines). Should be able to get something within your budget.

I got my baby as an unbacked 3 yr old unregistered TBxID. he's currently 16.1 he was £1400. should hopefully make 16.2- good bone... i got him in england via (horsemart) although now he's living in ireland with me and hunting and riding away very well... i've come across lots of lovely youngsters here too...they are out there....if you're prepared to travel a bit..some (2/3yr olds) are even being abandoned at the sales. pm me if you want more help! :-)

You don't need a "reputable breeder" - you need one who is SO desperate to sell youngstock that he/she will give them away for BELOW the cost of production. They ARE around - thanks to the recession, the high cost of forage - and a slump in demand for foals and yearlings.

My pure-bred Irish Draught geldings cost me a MINIMUM of £1800 to get on the ground - and that's if nothing goes wrong! Like a 3 year old I sold recently - for just over double what you're hoping to pay. He had Neonatal Maladjustment Syndrome and it cost me £700 in vet's bills, iv drips etc to keep him alive for the first week!! By the time he was backed and going quietly, there was NO profit at all - he didn't even cover his costs! Or a stunning 2 year old I have at present - to make a quality 17 hh HW. He was so big at birth he kicked his mother internally and caused a massive haemorrhage which nearly killed her - £800 to save her - and a year off breeding.

But excluding those disasters - which are just my bad luck and my loss - a problem free youngster will have cost me £3,000 - 3,500 by the time he's 2! You just can't rear youngsters properly for less, with feed, worming, vaccinations, regular foot trimming etc. - hell, just registering the damn things, with vet id, microchip, DNA etc costs over £200!

Why SHOULD reputable breeders who produce quality youngsters well then subsidise buyers to the tune of £2,000 or so per horse???
