hiya, does anybody know the difference between a show hunter class and a working hunter class? they have both at a show coming up and theyre open to horses and ponies. working hunter says it has 4 jumps at 2ft3 but the other doesnt. do you have to have a certain type of horse to do either?? (mouse is a connemara x ) xx
thanks :D:D:D

Working hunter class you have a set of natural fences to jump and then your individual show, showing the horses paces. Show hunter there is no jumping involved (if I'm correct) usually walk, trot, canter & a decent gallop! :)

Showings not my thing so someone else will have better advice. I've only ever done shows I can hack to & done workers as it has jumps to do. Mines connie x tb & does quite well in them. Depending how old you are there's usually working hunter pony with jumps, some shows do native working hunter too. There's usually a novice class too for pairs that haven't been placed first in a wh class before.
Could be wrong as like I say showings not my thing but show hunters are usually finer. Just go & have fun!

Both classes are basically to judge a horses potential for the hunting field.

Working hunter classes are a show class with a jumping element. Normally you would jump a course of rustic jumps, and those that have jumped clear will be called back for the 'show' side, whereby the horses confirmation etc will be considered.

The advantage of a WH class is that horses that are not 'showy' get a better chance of being placed, assuming they jump well. I have a l/w cob who usually does very well in these classes as always jumps a nice, forward going round, but wouldn't show him as a Show/ridden hunter as not typey enough.

Ridden hunter/show hunter classes are purely on the flat, showing off paces and confirmation. Typically a ridden hunter will be a larger horse, with reasonable bone, such as an ID cross. They should also be judged on manners as a well mannered horse is expected on the hunting field.

With a connie x I would stick to the WH class, assuming you are happy to jump.

Hope that helps and good luck!
