Hunter clip +rugs?

im a bit new to having a horse who has a hunter clip. I was wondering how do you tell what rug is needed? how hot do they need to be for what rug?

Sorry if i dont make much sense. See atm she feels really toasty in a lightweight turnout but was told this is 'cruel' and she wont be warm on the inside'.....(got me confued that one!)

What do you guys do?
 
Feel under arm pits at front, inside back legs and base of ears if warm horse is warm internally.
I like to put my hand inside rug and feel warm but not hot, same kind of feeling as when i put hand under on t shirt type warmth. Likelihood is its prob a little warm like that but i have a wimp who if feels like that in day i know will be ok at night.
No reason why if yours is in a light weight she won't be warm enough- i presume it has a neck cover too? Only because you take away waterproof factor when clipping
 
Hi Rosie'smum. I think it depends on the horse. My cob had a hunter clip last weekend (legs and face left on), she is quite a hot horse. I put a 100g rug on her and when I bought her in she kept rolling. Took the rug off and she stopped. She was too hot, so is now in a no fill turnout.
She has a 100g rug and a 200g rug so I'll just have to see how the weather is and adjust accordingly.
 
see thats what i was thinking but thought id pop my head in here and see how others rug. Yeah she lived out in the lightweight but only came in over night this week and got terrible looks for daring to leave her naked! She was too hot really in just a fleece. Think i may up her rug to a medium though as did feel slightly cool tonight when got her from the field.

Thank you for making me feel not so insane.
 
Yeah it has been with a neck. Have done all that too with checking armpits etc just thought maybe i was missing something but I knw im mostly sane :P
 
Hunter clip? You mean everything off except the legs?
If so, then your horse might get cold - in fact will get cold in a light weight turn-out rug - as that will not be compensating adequately for his lack of coat, and the lovely greases within that natural coat that keeps him warm.
All my horses have hunter clips - they are 2 TB's and a half bred. They are in at night with a sheet and a thick stable rug. They all go out during the day for anything up to a couple of hours to 5 or 6 hours. They have heavy weight NZ rugs and a sheet or a fleece under those rugs. If the weather is really vile - i.e. relentless rain (like it is at the moment - then they do not go out) If it is a clear frosty day, then they do go out for several hours, as they will keep themselves warm, moving about, rolling, having a play. If it is raining, then they just huddle, and get cold......If they have to stay in for a day or two, then I cut their hard feed right back, and up the hay ration. If they are going out everyday, then they get the full ration. Good feed, good rugs will help keep them warm, but constant rain on their backs will make them miserable and prone to all sort of ills.......I would only hunter clip, if (and I can be) flexible about turn out......
