So, there I am tonight at the yard after work.
Discard shoes & slip on my hunter wellies, remove work jacket & lob on the standby flouro Dickies jacket in the feed shed....
Trudge up the fields to greet the fuzzies, wander round aimlessly in the half-light (ok, fast-speeding walk actually) poo-picking, then return to yard & make up breakfast feeds......

Then, remove jacket & boots - and as I removed the boots I realised my right foot was rather soggy :( right across the ball of my foot :blue:

On thinking about it, I thought I'd had them for quite a while but was still pretty annoyed at a damp foot.

Getting home, I realised I brought them at the Newbury show (Royal County of Berkshire) held in September one year when it was rather wet & I was judging.... however, I dont think I can go in all guns blazing to Hunter as I brought the boots in ........... 1992 :redface3::eek3:

They've done pretty well, those poor boots; been kept in the horsebox for 12 years for wet days, then in the feed shed & used on any really wet days or long-grass expeditions to locate fuzzies in early mornings and most days after work for the short time I'm at the yard in the late autumn/winter...only shoved aside by Ariat boots for riding or dry days, or longer trips to the yard etc..

RIP old lovely Hunter wellies, a :drunk: to you in welly retirement.

Now could someone please recco me some that will do me an equally long lasting service? :smile3:

It won't happen, my 1995 hunters are still going strong , but the Harry hall x3, ariat, dublins, and just togs never last longer than a year. If you find something do let me know.

I have a pair of Aigles now, afraid i can't comment on strength but they're very comfy! this might not make much sense but as they've got quite a thick sole, they will hopefully keep my feet warm! :P

I promise you will never get a pair that will last that long again

Rip long lasting, well made, reliable, comfy hunters..... You deserve a place in wellie heaven!!!!

I've had my pair since Dec '11, and they've cracked at the ankles :(. Only used them for rowing for the first six months, then they did a summer's yard duties, winter off (I use muckers in winter) then promptly cracked at Blair this year. Disappointed, especially considering the price and that my old Hunters wore through the sole before giving in!

Everything it seems these days, is made on the cheap. Very sad world we live in now :( My showing jods were bought back in summer of 2003. I bought some very similar, but different colour earlier this year- they've already started to fade and wear, yet are barely worn.

Thank you for your kind posts about my lovely comfy Hunters :)

I will probably just go & get a very cheap pair of wellies then, if the new models are so rubbish :(

Wallykissmas - my Ariats are still going strong, the only ones that really went Pete-Tong were the Brossards - they cracked after 18 months & leaked badly, but were the only thing at the time that kept my feet warm & toasty :)

I managed to buy an original pair of hunters on ebay - the soles are a little worn, but have high hopes for their longevity!

I will never buy a new pair again - they are useless and have not had a pair last more than 6 mnths, and are more aimed at festival goers now than the real outdoor enthusiasts.

The basic dunlop wellies also last well for the price (under a tenner), and although not 'designer', do the job well.

My Ariats cracked around where the rubber attaches to the side of the leather , they were ten months old, I sent them back and they glued them, months later they have done the same so I've glued them and will await their departure. Won't be buying another pair for sure. Just not worth the outlay.

Dont give up, my Bromonts, Grasmere's and Quantums are all going strong (keeps fingers xx'd)

The Hunters I got free about 2 years ago for subscribing to H&H are still going strong, but they are slightly heavier duty, and heavier than the normal ones. I've had 2 pairs of those crack at the ankles within a year, so won't buy any more. I love my muck boots!

Toggi wellies are fab! The ones which a neoprene on the inside. Had mine probable four years? worn everyday for about 8 months of the year and no sign of cracking, sole is wearing now though..

I also got these with my horse & hound subs and they Didn't even last 6 months before the heel started soaking up water from the bottom!! If I had bought them I would have been able to send them back I'm sure but as I didn't have the receipt, I just now wear them on dry days as they still look in perfect condition. They are the balmoral hunters I believe. My husband bought me a pair of Aigle 2 years ago which are still going strong with a whole lot more what than the hunters.

Mine are Le Chameaus that have been going over ten years now, and their only fault is one insole came loose earlier this year. The mothership got a new pair about 18 months ago and ok, they're not getting the same battering treatment but aren't showing any hint of issues.

RIP Hunters!

I really like my Toggi Wanders - they are neoprene lined so warm, comfortable & seem to be lasting really well (they I think, are coming into their third winter) & showing no signs of wear (bar dirt, obviously).

They are definitely under £50 too.

My hunters (born feb 2013) are on the brink of death. They have a lovely threatening 'split' on the sole of both boots where the ball of my foot is. The material is 'cracking' around my ankle and I'm sure they sometimes decide to leak and then miraculously repair themselves.

I'm expecting them to die sometime in winter 2013 :-(

The new hunters are not made the same and are utterly poo, my last pair lasted about 18 months.
Ive got some Le Chameau now, and they are well worth it! especially in the winter, they dont let the cold through as much as hunters. Love them!

Hunter wellies are now made in china, not the UK *SIGH* , and they have changed the maufacturing process. They are no longer the same boot. - found this on wikipedia ....

Hunter Boot Ltd enjoyed a record season in summer 2007 announcing, in August, an 85% sales increase against the same period in 2006[22] Despite this, Hunter remained faced with major financial challenges regarding production. High manufacturing and fuel costs that contributed to the company's move into administration in 2006 remained prominent and, like many UK manufacturing businesses, Hunter was forced to consider whether it was commercially viable to keep making boots in the UK. The company also had to negotiate a volatile relationship with its landlord and an expensive and inefficient 96-year-old factory. Eventually, alternative supply sources were sought and developed in Europe and the Far East and plans were made to exit the Dumfries plant and relocate the company HQ to Edinburgh.[23] This move was finally made in September 2008. The Chinese made gumboots are visually similar to the original Scottish made gumboots apart from the addition of an internal seam. Some manufacturing efficiencies have also been made including the removal of the latex dipping process, making the boots virtually identical to those from many other manufacturers.

Very interesting thread! I am in the market for some new wellies and was about to treat myself to some hunters. I dont think I'll bother now!!

Hunter are making boots again under the name Century. Look exactly the same and same price. Mine are now entering their 2nd year and still going strong so fingers crossed.
