That hind end would bother me tbh.

How old is the horse
What has it done
Is it doing the job you want it to do
How much

I know a horse who similar back end, purchased for low 4 figs about 5 years ago after eventing to 100 and hunting with prev owners.

18 now, they went 1* last year.

The first photo, although not ideal is a lot more flattering than the other 2

Horses with less than perfect confo have gone on to great things but I’d want to know why it has a lack of development in hind end and “hunters bump” is just a nice way of saying stress/strain/problems in the sacroiliac joint.

13 year old ex race horse. Only retired this year and did jump racing. Now hunts and doing some schooling etc. I’m worried too. But maybe just needs to gain some weight?

His temperament is meant to be just amazing. It’s a tricky one!

What do you want them to do?
Are you getting it vetted?

From pic 2 it looks like it might have quite straight/upright legs which can cause problems in SI but as it’s raced it be worried it has fallen.

I want a happy hacker with the occasional fun ride and hunt (not jumping though!).
I am not bothered about schooling etc.

But most of all, I just want a happy horse who feels comfortable!!

Will deff get vetted if I like him. It’s just a 4 hour journey and would rather save it if it’s obvious to people that it’s ‘bad’

a horse won’t “pass” or “fail” a vet. The vet will just decide if it’s fit for the job on that day.

Is it a private sale or dealer? Try do some stalking. You’ve got some comeback if it’s a trade seller.

A hunters bump can be improved with physio/chiro and correct work (not necessarily schooling, but working correctly hacking would be great, slopping around on a slack rein not good for a less than ideal back) they usually appear due to an issue (injury)

Adhesions form around the SI joint which give it that raised appearance.

Lack of condition doesn’t look like that really x

So you think it is a hunters bump from SI issues?

Dealer specialising in retrained race horses. Shockingly… he is 9.5k which seems like a lot of money??? It’s because he’s meant to have an amazing temperament - very safe and reliable and kind. Hunts, won his first dressage show, has done XC etc. so now classified as an ‘all rounder’.

I don’t really want to buy a horse tomorrow then spend thousands on physios etc

9.5k???? No ****** way. That's not worth a 4 hour trip.

(sorry)

To me, from those pics. It’s not a pronounced croup it’s some sort of SI thing going on.

I am far from an expert!!! But seen plenty of horses with issues come through the yard.

I wouldn’t drive 4 hours to look at that, for 9.5.

There will be something closer, in budget, and age, as a happy hacker with less chancey confo

No horse is perfect I get that. But no. Not for me

There’s tons of good dealers, I’d probably choose a dealer over a private seller (unless I knew seller, or seller vicariously)

So it’s not a dealer dig don’t let that bit put you off.

You can get a high croup, roach back or goose back.
Which is naff confirmation.

Hunters bump is an SI issue. Adhesions forming in the ligaments around the SI joint, which I would hazard a guess is the case cos its back end looks weak.

It does look marginally better in the first photo. Would probably want to see some vids of it moving.

Thank you, it’s just his face drew me in immediately. To be honest I totally fell in love with him the moment I saw him and I’ve never had that from just looking at an ad before!!! Even though my brain knows he doesn’t look great. The dealer said it’s because he needs to build a top line and that he’s dropped condition due to long days hunting ….

I’ve paid £25 for the viewing but I guess that’s nothing in the grand scheme of it. I just don’t want to be another ‘time waster’ as been chatting for a week. But it is far to go especially in this storm!

Thanks so much for the advice. I love this forum!

If you're thinking of getting an ex racer, I can put you in touch with someone local - obviously as we're near to Epsom, there are a lot of ex racers looking for homes. My contact would probably have them fairly fresh off the track though, rather than retrained - would that be something you're still interested in? Or was it that you liked this particular horse who just happened to be an ex racer?

If those 3 photos are the only ones you've seen, I'd be asking where the photos of the hunting, XC and dressage win are. A dealer retraining a horse for sale will make sure to take photos of all the trips out. If there are no photos, sorry, but I just wouldn't believe that they happened.

I sent you a private message with a video :)

exactly this

I know a lady that retrains ROR and starts a lot of them hunting, then a bit of eventing.

There is comprehensive evidence of all this!

Please don't be quick to pay for a viewing. A very reputable dealer I know has mentioned possibly charging for viewings due to too many timewasters not showing up, but a lot of the time the 'dealers' asking for this are scammers.

Have you searched for this dealers name on any of the Facebook Dodgy Dealers pages?

A viewing fee, that price, and those photos are all ringing alarm bells for me, I'm sorry x

If he was nearby and cheap I’d go look

Paying for a viewing screams dodgy to me. Never ever ever done that.

Horses don’t drop condition due to hunting unless they’ve got piss poor management or an unresolved pain issue - both red flags here.

That’s v kind but definitely want a retrained one. I actually wanted an established hunter Irish sports horse type but ended up falling in love with this one.

she has plenty photos and videos of him out hunting etc I just didn’t attach.

Thank you! X

She’s a reputable seller and I has so many time wasters when she has spent ages getting her horses ready etc. I do get it to be fair. She has great reviews and her horses look well kept (this one’s just in bad condition from racing I think!).

But I do agree the price is mad. And no, that’s so helpful so don’t apologise x

Ok, ignore my last few posts with regard to the dealer then 🥰

But still, 4 hours in this weather is still a long way, and £9.5k is a verrrry high price for what that horse seems to be. Especially if it's not what you were actually looking for. (I do know how easy it is to fall in love with the wrong horse though, been there, bought that!)

Also when this year did it retire.

Cos it still shouldn’t be in “bad condition”

I hunt with a lot of pointers and they are racing fit and don’t look like that.

I can't comment on horse but I had one with a hunters bump, best horse ever! He was ID x tb. Won a lot of working hunter classes with him. Definitely no injury as I knew him from very young and I bought him at 4 years old. As others have said there are lots of lovely exracers about, retrained, for a fraction of the price.

I think the photos and angles are deceptive. See what they are like in person but don’t feel obligated to buy because you’ve come so far and like his face. Head on, not heart. He is expensive for what he is though if his temperament really is wonderful it is up to you if you’re willing to spend that.

I dont think that is whats going on here. The horse has a very sloping croup down to a low set tail. I cant see any sort of actual hunters bump.

OP if he retired sound at 13 and has been out of racing working hard and still stayed sound and you want to do less work, he's a really good bet for a low budget horse
