Hi I'm looking for information on hunters bump!. Had my ID since he was 4years old hes now 9 years old and he's never been lame! Other than him getting kicked in the field a few years back! someone on the farm told me yesterday that he's got hunters bump and I'm wondering if this is going to turn into a problem or not? We dont jump or hunt we are just happy hackers who love to hack out for hours with trot and a canter in the woods, he's a big lad and very long as he's 17hh thanks gemzo Xx

I believe (but may be wrong) that a hunters bump refers to a horse having an under developed top line and therefore a hollow behind where the saddle would sit. I'm by no means an expert though and have taken that conclusion from watching art2ride on you tube where he often talks about horses having a hunters bump. Hope that helps (providing I'm right!)

I think a "hunter's bump" or "jumper's bump" is caused by torn ligaments due to stress (usually in jumping horses, hence the name) over the sacroiliac joint and pelvis. It is associated with pain in the lumbar region and they can get issues from compensation eg. hock issues. Someone people mix up this condition with a goose rump, where the croup is simply built steep and sloping, which is purely a type of conformation and shouldn't cause issues! Unless you start over-complicating things , with conformation predisposing them to issues ;)
