Following from a couple of posts about hunting different breeds, I've been thinking about it, and I can't think of any type or breed of horse that wouldn't suit hunting in some shape or form.

Fair enough there are a small % of horses that it's just too much for, I've only ridden one but he frightened me to death!

But as for the rest, I think hunting has such a wide range of what horses for different riders/country have to do, there is a perfect hunter for everyone, with every different type of horse! :) Which I think makes hunting all the more fab - something for everyone!

I know you tend to get typical types in different hunts, in our hunt it tends to be chunky small MW types, in Leicestershire you might have bigger, more scopey horses, and in plough/arable country TB types becasue they are the only one that can keep going!

At the end of the day though, theres always a tiny pony who comes and shows everyone up!

I think everyone should go for it - and have fun! :)

What do you lot think?? sorry for my rambling! :(

I'm glad you said that BB. I have a 17hh Trakehner who I'd love to do a bit of hunting with but have given it some thought because he has such long lanky legs, I think they might not be strong enough! I didn't hunt my last horse - a French trotter, simply because he was hopeless in the company of other horses.

Iv'e never dared to go hunting , our pony hunted in Ireland before we bought him and is a complete hot head in company ( which can be interesting at pony club!!) he's an angel at home but I think if I took him hunting he would pull my arms off!! shame really because I think he would love it and loads of pony club instructors have said he should go but Im a wuss! :(

I think anything can hunt. Obv bigger jumping country requires something with some element of a jump but most horses/ponies will jump with the field (eventually!)
Best hunter I have the pleasure of riding is a 14hh connie pony.

So true, I think there are very few horses that won't jump most stuff in the field, not talking huge hedges, but your usual hunt jumps etc.

I had a 14.1 welsh D, and he jumped everything in any country! :)

i used to hunt my 13hh connie and he was awesome! used to give some of the big horses leads sometimes! the only thing that he did which was a pain was rear! when we were stood at the beginning he'd get impatient and rear lol. but other than that he was amazing, hunted in a snaffle which was even better. my 15hh mare is strong out hunting but will jump anything which suits me although i tend to stick to small things at the moment unless its necessary (she's only 5 :p)! any horse can hunt although my friend has a 14hh welsh D that i had the pleasure of taking with the bloodhounds last season and she is a head case! she pulls like a train and leaps about but enjoys it sooo much that my friend takes her out a fair few times in the season! hunting is for everyone and most of the time the jumps can be got round (at least they can round us :p!).

I've never taken my boy out as despite his sensible cob looks he has the brain of the stupidist flighty horse going when he sees or hears the Hunt (they draw opposite our field) and he has an complete inability to stand still, can't even manage a 5 second immobility in a dressage test before he rears!

BUT there is a beagle pack to be kenneled in our village soon, that should get my fitness up even if the horse remains fat!

Yep my cob still is the best thing i have ever hunted. He was awesome,a nd would jump all the BIG derbyshire hedges with his eyes closed!!
G horse is a bit wild about it all....true hunting is too much and we just wave to everyone lots, but he is better bloodhounding. Am going to be hunting a mad TB type soon which will be fun...

I've hunted on a highland pony - best days hunting ever!! It's nice to know you have a surefooted animal underneath you.

I have also hunted a WB - scariest days hunting ever

But mainly I hunted my old Standardbred pacer! He cound't canter - only pace so we used to get some strange looks as he went pacing by!!!

My nephew even hunted on his Shetland! - it was the worst behaved out of all of the hunt!!! little sh1t!
