Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum :) I was hoping to start hunting next year but the horse I'm currently riding has never hunted and sometimes bucks, particularly when cantering alongside other horses :/ If anyone could offer some advice I would be very grateful! Also what should I wear? Anything else I need to be aware of? Thanks :)

A friend offered me her pony to hunt and I might accept however that wouldn't be a long term solution :/ Also I have never hunted before and I would much rather ride a familiar horse (even If he's naughty!) And she did say her pony gets strong and likes to be upfront

Beige jods, tweed jacket, white shirt/stock and hairnet - basically how you would dress showing a M&M.

If you have a sticky bum then I say go for it; he's only going to get better with practice.

The danger with a bucker out hunting is that he may clip another horse/rider. If you think this is likely I would avoid or try a few 'fun' rides first to see how he copes where it will be easier to keep him out of harm's way.

Unless you're sadistic then 5 hours out with a horse that will buck everytime the horses move off will get a little wearing after the first hour, not to mention all the lovely looks you're going to get from everyone else, so if you can't work on it in a different environment as suggested, then take something else.

Some horses just find certain situations too exciting, maybe stick a red ribbon on his tail to say he's a potential kicker and then try and stick at the back.

This. I certainly don't think the other people riding near you will appreciate it! I would say keep him near the back but you've said he's strong and prefers to be up front.
I would find a more suitable mount, particularly for your first hunt.

My horse isn't strong, that's my friends pony I was offered.
I have been riding him in a small group, doing more galloping and jumping, and he has been well mannered and not bucked at all for the past few weeks, but I'm not sure how he would react to the atmosphere :/

The first time I took my well mannered 5 year old out he lit up like a Christmas Tree, then spent the next 4 hours doing various airs above ground after dumping me twice, then rounded the meet off by diving in amongst the masters when he simply wouldnt be left. He never went hunting again!
