I have never ever hunted before and i would love to try it. there are a couple of local evening hunts next week that i'd like to try before i go to the big meets but i've never been before so no idea what its like. Do you have time to warm your horse up abit before you set off? or do you just go for it? also do you bother with boots, i wasn't planning on using any but wanted to know what other people do.
also any tips/advice would be more than welcome as i'm a bit nervous about going. no doubt the pony will knick off at 100mph but it will all be part of the fun :D

You'll be wanting to post this in the Hunting section m'dear :)

Advice wise:
Imagine your horse doing XC after a week of being on competition mix = Bit/gadget accordingly!!! ;) I go for a fulmer snaffle with running martingale for mine, thus nice and soft if she is lovely. or steering and brakes if not!!!
Warm up - None needed - everyone warms up with a good trot to set off, and besides this time of year the pace is slow!
Boots - not many do - personally depends on horse, depends on how long you think you will be out - Unlikely to be jumping much at this time of year - you dont want legs to overheat - I would say no boots, or some air cooled brushing boot style?

p.s. Have lots of fun!!!! :D if you post in the hunting section do include where your going, someone might offer to nanny you and give you a sensible lead :)

Try posting in "hunting" to get more advice but basically tidy up pony by plaiting and removing all visible mud, wack on some boots all round, stick a hacking/show jacket on with beige joddies, hairnet, gloves and clean boots, back protector is a good idea until you feel you are safe and some decent brakes!!

Oh and enjoy!!

Keep out of trouble towards the back and don't feel pressured to jump anything you cannot face. Say good morning (whatever the time) to those who look like they are pros when you turn up - and say goodnight (whatever the time) when you go home.

Have fun!

Hi, we don't plait for Autumn Hunting so it may be worth checking with the Secretary before you go - it's always correct to ask permission to attend anyway if you aren't a subscriber so you will need to ring him/her anyway.

Also I wouldn't advise hunting in boots as they can do more harm than good when grit & mud gets trapped inside them but of course it's personal choice - there is no right or wrong in terms of etiquette for this.

Good luck, you will have a great time :)

ETA - oh just seen above post!!
