ive only been twice but seriously have the bug!!
only problem is the only person i know that goes his horse is way to big for my trailer so the only one ive been with him is one that was hacking distance! he hunted my pony for 4 seasons so knows him well enough to give me advice which was pretty much point and go!!!
really want to get pony out b4 the season ends for the yr and there is a local one on wednesday and im considering going alone, just wondered how many people go alone and if its as good? i loved the fact of having someone with me so that i wasnt in the wrong place at the wrong time if that makes sense?? and someone there to reasure me on anything, i will probably still go but just wanted to know if other people go alone!!

Don't let that put you off. You'll find people chat at the meet and you'll soon bed in once you all move off. If you've got the bug, next season you can get out to some early morning meets and you'll soon recognise a core of familiar faces. There are riders who just go along when the meet is local to them and perhaps only make one or two a season so they may not know anyone at first. Generally people are very friendly and not many turn up together. I go alone although have been hunting for years so know the stalwarts but I certainly didn't when I first started. You'll be fine! Go and enjoy the day.

I used to hunt alone. When i moved to a new job in hants noone else at the yard hunted but i realy wanted to carry on hunting so i found out who the local pack was and where they where meeting then i used to hack to every meet that i could. I got to know people and made some realy good friends. Who often felt sorry for the pony having to hack often for up to 1 1/2 hrs to go hunting that they started offering me lifts to and from hunting if they where passing my yard. I even ended up working as groom for the president of the hunt for a while. I say go anyway get talking to people and make new friends it'll be fun i promise. good luck.

I have always gone on my own since I was about 10! You'll find most people are friendly and helpful and you'll soon make friends :)

phew....for a while i was panicking thinking maybe going alone wasnt such a good idea!!
its a local meet so hoping there is someone i recgonise to tag along with! thanx for the advice :)

I only ever go hunting on my own, and once you get into a routine you'll be fine. Have everything to hand for tacking up (if you don't travel tacked up) and leave it ready for getting back to the trailer.

if you speak to the sec and say you're on your own they'll probably suggest someone to stick with. Once you've been a few times someone is bound to take you under their wing, or you'll learn who to follow for being in the right spot at the right time!

go, have fun, and don't forget to tell us all about it!

i went alone once and then the next time and from then on i was never alone because i just talk to anyone and everyone and now i know almost everyone and have a great time no matter who is out!

I much prefer going on my own as I like to be free to decide where to be, what to jump and when to go home!

And although I've never had an accident/incident, the only thing I would say is make sure that the secretary at least knows that you are on your own so that if something happens people know to stop and help you out. Most hunts are great in this way I think, but make sure you have your phone, and if you don't know the country, perhaps photocopy the bit of the OS map of where you are hunting to help you find your way back to the trailer! Also, make sure your car keys are firmly zipped up in your breeches pocket........

(oh, just noticed you are hacking, so you don't need to worry about the trailer keys!)

You'll b fine, u can normally end up hackin back with some1 and hunts will help if there is an accident etc, one good way to get talkin to other peapole is when having a drink from hipflasks!!! And also over some choclate around!!

Yes I used to go by myself, in fact the first time I I went hunting was by myself! didnt know a sole, enjoyed it just the same, if you go on a regular basis you will soon get to know folk. :)

nooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it's been councilled!!!!!!
shame really cos iknew the area, oh well nx one on the 15th so hopefullly weather holds off!! just wish i'd had the gutts to go on my own earlier, ive missed all the others due to weather or lack of someone to go with!!
thats a good idea of taking a map, we got lost last time and ended up hacking back in the dark!! (luckily i was with someone else then!)
the secretary knows the pony well and remembered me from last time, also now thinking i like the fact i can choose what to jump, the lad i went with b4 made me jump everything apart from one (which was why we got lost!)
thanx for the advice guys :D

When I started I wouldn't go out on my own, but after being forced to go alone at the beginning of this season by a friend dropping out at the last minute I think it is the best way. I find if you arrange to go with other people something always happens and if you aren't bothered about being alone it doesn't ruin your plans. To be honest I prefer it because you can go exactly where you want, leave when you want and you meet more people. Also my horse is clingy if she is out with someone she knows and I find her much more enjoyable on her own.x

I went to my first one on my own today (second one ever!) and I was contemplating not going as I didn't know anyone, but then figured if I don't go alone then I'll never know anyone, so off I went, alone, and everyone was really friendly, welcoming and helpful :) So definately don't let it put you off! Have fun when you get out :)
