Hunting and body protectors

Is it a total no-no? If acceptable, could one be worn over your jacket? (Mine would have to, I have the same jacket that was bought for me when I was 16, I'm 37 now! )

Its fine- loads of peeps wear them out hunting. I think the PC kids have to! I wear one if i am on baby or a new horse- its one of the slimline caldene ones designed to fit under a jacket ( and Im 37!) As long as its a neutral colour that is close to your jacket colour then i doubt anyone would notice let alone comment.

I'm under 16 and in the PC so have to but some adults do and no-one notices tbh

Thanks guys! So would it look really bad if I wore a blue bp over a tweed jacket? (This is the only kit I have, don't want to shell out loads of cash to get new kit just to try hunting, have never been before!)

I worn a blue b.p over my jacket when i went hunting, there were just the two of us wearing them, but i'm glad I did as I went out the side door over a jump!!!! . It was my 1st time also.

When I went hunting and when I go cubbing this year, I will be wearing mine over my jacket, as my jacket is too tight for it to go under. It's black and my jacket is tweed

Yeah you'd be suprised actually, quite a few do wear them, its just that you dont really notice, if there black/blue.

If they are such a waste of time and money then why do jockeys wear them?, why do you have to wear them when competing in XC? why do shops sell them and people buy them?

Of course they offer you some protection, sorry but what a comment to make to someone who is wanting to take up hunting and obviously taking their own safety into consideration.

I've never hunted but have always wanted to. I've recently been taking my youngster out on hunt fun rides with the hope of us becoming confident enough to join the local hunt.

Am I really going to get sneered at by people like skiddaw_lad if I wear my body protector?

I don't normally come on this forum. What a bit of luck I did before I turn up at the local hunt and get laughed at and made to feel a freak.

How to turn people against supporting the countryside and hunting. If this is the general attitude of members, I'm not sure I want anything to do with it afterall.

IMHO of course you can wear them, but personnel don't, as they will only you protect from a certain about of crush injuries. I personnel think they are too restrictive when jumping hedges etc.... Plus in winter, ground is alot softer!!!
BUT wear it if you feel happy, plus it will keep you warmer

Snowdrop, most people won't give a BP on a rider a second thought. Don't worry about it, and wear it if it helps you. I see people out in them all the time, and I go out with 4 different hunts, never seen anyone sneered at for it.

What a stupid remark! :crazy: Its comments like that, that stop people [especially teens] wearing them, and consequently get injured!

They DO prevent injuries, I fell off and bruised a few ribs, almost shattered collarbone and severe concussion last Xmas.
If I had bothered to wear a BP [which I should have been doing due to the fact i was jumping a nervous horse] I wouldn't have had the first two problems.

I hate wearing mine but wear it when jumping or XC-ing, would defintely wear if I went hunting. Keeps me warm too!!!

i went hunting in a BP years and years ago, it was one of the bright blue ones that fastened under your crotch

no one batted an eye lid bless 'em.

they were classy people though, really nice and welcoming.

Nothing will protect you if a horse lands on you but a well fitted flexible BP will protect you from a huge amount of very serious injuries. The racesafe 2000 allows you to tuck and roll and will prevent major breaks that at the worst could lead to paralysis. I came off a bolter april 2007 and broke my lower back - if i had been wearing a BP i wouldn't have had more than a few bruises. I learnt my lesson needless to say!

To OP - you won't be laughed at for wearing one xxxx

S_L I know what you mean, but I asked the question because I have never been, and I do know that there is a certain amount of etiquette to be adhered to. I don't want to be sent home because I've got something wrong! I think it's good for people to educate themselves about what's expected, rather than just turn up and potentially annoy the hunt with bad behaviour or incorrect dress.

Your comment about wearing a BP and nothing else did make me laugh, though!

FTR - I don't wear a BP, but obviously it is individual choice and I don't think anyone would be looked down upon for wearing one - I think SL is thinking more - WHO CARES???

Hunting is hunting, and he probably misses actually hunting talk which has been replaced with "should/shouldn't I wear this" threads.... understandable I think.

Sorry I haven't been a million times, and have the gall to ask a "stupid" question about it. But surely, even for you experienced hunters, there was a first time? Also remember that if you effectively try and discourage others from going, the activity really will die out one day.

And if I'm really not allowed to ask any questions, don't moan if I turn up to your meet in a pink velour tracksuit on a filthy horse over which I have no control, and p|ss off your landowners and ruin your day.
