I use an elastic one that attaches to the girth and has a strap over the neck. Only because that is what I have and it works, I don't use a martingale.
The hunters at work all have traditional hunting breastplates with martingales attached apart from one owner who has a leather breastplate that attaches to the girth with a strap over the neck and a separate martingale.

I have the Albion one, which is brown elasticated over the neck (with a nice leather bit too, which works as a great neck strap!) it just attaches to the saddle and has a martingale attachment if you want it, i keep mine on!

Its great for hunting, looks smart and very easy to clean, the mud just brushes off!!

I use a leather polo style breastplate - it's about the only thing that stops my lads saddle sliding around too much (and yes his saddle fits perfectly - it's just our hills are steep!), plus it gives you a neck strap.

next to no-one i hunt with does without a breastplate of some sort, but almost none are elasticated.

I have one piece of advice I feel I should share. With any breastplate which goes across the whithers/neck of your horse...WEAR LEATHER GLOVES. If your horse snatches, jumps awkwardly, pecks or pulls and your freezing cold knuckles get knocked on that bit of leather it hurts...alot. I only say leather because I wear through cotton gloves quickly.
(should wear gloves anyway but trust me my horse has always had a breastplate)
