I have a very old Rosette one - I'd say its a MW to HW jacket, I feel the cold dreadfully, and find I am OK in this, except the odd time if I am stuck on top of a hill or something.

I have just managed to get myself a bargain wool waistcoat to wear underneath now, as well as my long sleeved thermal top and stock shirt.

I have the heavy one sold by Rideaway for around £150. Worth every penny. Very warm, quite waterproof, completely windproof. Dries and then you just brush off the mud. I have mine cleaned once a year at the end of the season. Nicely shaped too. I wear black but I have a black horse, and most of the meet are in black.

You could always try Calcutts of Sutton Scotney Hampshire. They sell various types and are old fashioned hunting gear suppliers as well as selling a reasonable stock of second hand coats?

I have just bought a Caldene Wessex and it is lovely. Fits really well.

I have spent the past 3 months buying coats off ebay and none of them were right, so they are all going back on ebay! The Caldene is not the cheapest off the peg, but also not the most expensive, and nice quality I think. Amira Equi (online shop) sells them the cheapest by far.

It is a real conundrum, buying a hunt coat off the peg. There is nowhere you can go that has a great selection. Even Calcutts, which I visited last year, does not have a lot to choose from.

mine is a shires one, and perfectly acceptable. OH has a caldene one, and says it's warm enough for him, but thinks that someone who gets cold easily would need a thicker one.

How do you find the shires one? I've been keeping an eye on them for when/if I ever get out as they look fairly reasonably priced.

I like mine a lot. It's warm, keeps me dry, looks smart and is easy to brush off. excellent value for money IMO!

Thanks now all I need to do is get some transport or wait for one of the local packs to have a meet within hacking distance on a weekend!

as long as we have some hi vis in a pocket we think nothing of hacking up to 9 miles to a meet, having a few hours hunting, then hacking home again! who needs transport?! :D

worth keeping an eye on ebay for them - they often pop up for a bargain if you're quick off the mark!
