I dont no how old u are but if ur undre 21 its £40 withe the packs i hunt with and over its about £60 of £80 for a day visit and its cheeper if you go with draghounds or bloodhounds
Hi Wonky, Before you set off you need a lorry so go for it and get one of those big uns with central heating, hot and cold running water and a decent mini-bar (if you take this option make sure you go for the hunky driver option as well to bring you home). Of course you'll also need enough horses to stay out all day (just to get your money's worth) so get a couple of extra 16.2s that jump for England. Also think of all the clothes - thermal knickers, waterproofs and them new derburries everyone seems to wear. So adding the 250K for the lorry, 20K for the horses and 10k for the gear the simple answer is £280,000 so go for it.
Option 2 is go try and get a number for someone from the local hunt, give them (maybe your farrier who might still be a whip) a call and go for a trial day. Get there any way you can, seek advice on etiquette and clothing and most of all enjoy, youll have a great day out.
Ring the secretary and ask them if they do any deals for newcomers or if they are doing a newcomers day - if they're half-decent they'll do you a deal 'cos they'll want the business - if you like it and you're a good jockey there are normally a few odd bods who want youngsters/new horses taken and will pay for you, by that time you will be addicted to it and just work to pay the subscription (round here £1800 per season and we have to travel for an hour on Saturdays and any other day not in 'ou' area.
At this point I would like to say that I have an issue with costs, especially one offs.
I hunted frequently when I was younger in a different county and have always been a supporter - went on the Marches and have 'converted' a few in my time
When 'real' hunting was coming to an end and the rallying cry came for support to be seen on the Field, I thought I would join the call and go for a couple of hours on my (then) horse to show solidarity, although this is something I couldn't do for a season - no money, one horse and no transport.
I rang the Secretary to explain, politely, that I'd like to be there to support and was quoted £75. Um... That's 3/4 of my DIY livery for the month! Excuse me!
I got told (rather snottily) that I was lucky it wasn't a Saturday, as that would be £120....
I DID go and paid what I could, which was £50 - a HUGE amount of money for a 2 hour hack (and yes, I do know what expenses a hunt faces, but...)
Upshot is, I wish I had been better welcomed and hadn't been made to feel like an impoverished oik.
Rant over and I apologise if I have sidetracked the thread.
Agree with Kate - it is far too much money for what you get. Our most local hunt is £55 for a Thursday (their cheapest day) in our area. For that you spend most of the day standing around chatting on ground I can ride on anyway - yes, it is a very expensive hack! And you cannot haggle with them. I hope to go out with an adjacent hunt this season - same price but country I haven't hunted on before.
I recommend bloodhounding, it's much better value for money. Cap is £50, they are very friendly and welcoming, they usually provide off road parking, you are guaranteed a good ride with plenty of jumping and you get well fed afterwards!
