Just an enquiry post really... but where would you look to find whip/kennel huntsman jobs? I know during the winter I saw them in the back of H&H but is there anywhere else? We would be quite happy to look anywhere in the country, or even in ireland...

How much experience have you actually got in working in hunt kennels?Because to get a job as a KH you need a lot of experience. All hunt staff when there looking for a new job they put their name on ther hunt staff registey list which the MFHA is in charge of, you get send a list of all the jobs that are going and the Masters who are looking for staff receive a list of staff, which includes, their ages, what hunts they have worked for before etc. You cant just go on the list tho, you need a ref from a master.

Thank you for the advice, its not for me, my OH spends a huge amount of time helping at the kennels, goes out 'picking up' etc. basically mucks in with everything, and has also whipped in on a number of occasions. Its what he's always wanted to do and I was just trying to encourage him to kinda go for his dream i guess, both the masters and the huntsman are always ringing up for his help, and as I say he has been asked to whip in quite regularly, so I'm guessing he's quite useful :) just trying to get ideas for how to go about helping him thats all...

Echo FH1, hunt jobs normally go on the list and new positions start on the 1st May, so most jobs start to come up around Christmas when staff are asked if they are staying or leaving. Some will be advertised in H and H from then on too. If he wants to he needs to be prepared that he will start at the bottom and work his way up, long hours, not great pay and hard work. Skinning/Groom, 2nd Whip, 1st Whip, KH, H. Long apprenticeship and it is a way of life.

It certainly is a way of life!!! Long hours, very few thanks and only as good as your last days hunting!! But wouldn't have missed my time in the job for anything. If your other half is helping in kennels and is as useful as you say they wont want to lose him!! Have a word with your Huntsman about getting in touch with MFHA about list then ask Master/s for a ref. Good Luck and good Hunting
