Hi guys just after some advice. I have a just turned 6 year old wb x tb. He was backed at 4 1/2 been out to a few comps, xc schooled, works well on flat. Just wondering whether a season hunting would be good for him? Hes quite lazy, and finds the company of other horses on grass exciting ☺ also finding him quite nappy and spooky at the moment?
TIA for replies

Can't help with who to go out with but my WBXTB took to hunting like a duck to water. On our first outing Autumn hunting the field master complimented her behaviour, was gobsmacked that she was in a snaffle, positively green that she would walk sensibly on a long rein and couldn't believe she was only 5.

Start now with some hunt pleasure rides and hound exercises to give your horse gradual experience and keep giving him lots of positive experiences.

I don't do pleasure rides and hound exercise with inexperienced horses I take them autumn hunting as often as I can three times a week is what I aim for I prefer this way as it's easier to get away from the action if the horse becomes upset and it's easier to teach them one of the most important skills a good hunter has ,standing .

Tallywhacker my daughter took her then 4 yr old wb out autumn hunting with the Beaufort. There were approx 210 out that day. What did he do at the first covert - put his head down and grazed! Might be an idea to buddy up with someone so you have someone to turn away with to hack home if you don't want to stay out all morning

tallywhacker, you need to ring the Hon Sec of the hunt you want to go out with. They will be able to tell you appropriate meets, where the parking is, time of the autumn hunting meets (changes during the season with daylight) etc etc. The Beaufort will have large fields, but will be very well managed and controlled. You could also try the VWH.
