Hunting newbie - should I take my own horse?

Hi

I'm a complete hunting newbie and don't know anyone who's hunted before.

I was lucky enough to win a free days hunt with the local hunt (Eglinton) at their annual show and I'm already excited about it. However I'm debating what horse to take.

My original plan was to borrow my sisters fell pony, who is bombproof, and who I trust when jumping which is a big factor as I'm afraid of jumping. However, my sister then said that if I wanted her to she'd pay and accompany me for the day so I wouldn't be abandoned on my own with strangers.

but that would involve me taking my own mare. She's a tb who we believe has raced in the Irish beach races. She can be very excitable in company and will rear, but recently has been very good for the last year when out with my sister or in go rounds in the showring. I am used to and willing to deal with her behaviour but there is now way I would consider jumping her.

The prefered horse choice is obvious, but I am frightened to go alone for a day's hunting having no clue what to expect.

So, any suggestions/opinions?

Ring the secretary and explain that you won the days hunting but don't know anyone that hunts. They will pair you up with someone.
Just go and enjoy your self you will soon make friends with people.

I personally would go on the safer horse and therefore on my own - explain to people that you are on your own and I'm sure they will look out for you and explain what's going on etc.

Have a great time!

I've just been out for the first couple of times and I've found everyone to be very friendly. I paired up with another girl at the back and we agreed not to leave each other if the gates needed doing etc. There were quite a few out who were first timers (start of the season so you can go on hound ex without becoming a member).
My horse can be very excitable though but he's settled into it like an old pro, really surprised me (and I've had him 12 years so thought I knew him inside out and was kitted up expecting the worst with gag, grackle etc 1st time!). After the 1st couple of blasts they seem to realise that they might need to conserve their energy! So if you do your TB she may surprise you!
