DEFRA is expected to make a number of announcements today (Friday, October 12) that will ease the burden of foot-and-mouth and Bluetongue restrictions in England.

The 20-day standstill rule is likely to be relaxed in the Low Risk foot-and-mouth area of England from next Wednesday (October 17). Other foot-and-mouth controls are also likely to eased.

Scotland and Wales have already announced that the 20-day rule will be lifted from October 17, which is the earliest date the Protection Zone in Surrey could be lifted. In all cases this would be subject to there being no further outbreaks.

Defra is also expected to announce a reduction of the size of the High Risk foot-and-mouth area, with some counties to be reclassified as Low Risk. This follows a review of the risk of disease spreading into the counties surrounding Surrey, where all the outbreaks have occurred so far.

Farming organisations are also hoping for an announcement on moves to enable movements direct to slaughter from inside the Bluetongue zone to abattoirs in the rest of the country.
