My friend is selling her pony (14hh/14.2hh) and wants him to go to a hunting home. He has been hunting and was very good but she wants to know what would make him more marketable to a suitable home (traits, things he's done etc)

Thanks :)

Do you mean traits on the hunting field?

Then things like good with hounds, will go on point, stands quietly to do gates, non kicker, jumps etc would be the things I would push.

If its only hunted, but is mannerly, then push the potential for hacking/fun rides/xc etc with a good temperament.

Not quite sure if this is what you are after?

Thanks F&M, that is the sort of thing I was looking for, do you know anything that she could do with him to make him more sellable, sort of, experiences which would benefit him etc?

Does it have a competition cv, even in past ownership? At that height it is likely to attract a teenager who might also want to compete or go to pony club in the summer mnths.

If it jumps it would be good to get it out to some none hunting type events over the winter to show its versatility.

If I am looking to buy a hunter then all the points I made above would be important, coupled with some good hunting photos to demonstrate.

Is he to be sold as a pure hunting pony, or an all-rounder that hunts? If as the latter, then doing a few local competitions over the winter would help, plus Pony Club rallies if you have someone eligible to take him. From a hunting point of view you should specify what sort of pack he has hunted with, how many times and the type of country and fences encountered. Is he a steady kick along type that would give confidence to an inexperienced child going out for their first hunt, or is he a more high-powered type that will be happy jumping decent hedges and big ditches? Does he stand quietly at the meet, is he controllable with good brakes, easy to load into horsebox or trailer? Any photographs or videos of him out hunting would also be a good selling point.
