Basically thought I'd rub in the fact that its Hunting Season here :p

Went out for the first time this year today. Beautiful countryside - hunting river flats along the Murray Rv (picture big old gumtrees with rich green turf underneath) and glorious sunny weather after a cold start (unfortunately not very good for scent).

10 1/2 couple of hounds out, who worked really hard and well all day. Didn't catch any foxes but got close to a couple. The longest hunt of the day was after a very smart fox who basically ran in a failry small circle from one lot of cover to another round the field who was staning in the middle looking confused and trying not to get in the way! ;)

Sadly one hound died of a suspected snake bite (possibly old fox bait) before anything could be done :(

A nice treat for a June morning! Glad you had a good day!

Are snakes a regular problem? I would have assumed they would slither off at the sound of 10 1/2 couple heading their way!

Given that it is the middle of winter and we have been having very cold nights you'd expect most snakes to be in hibernation, however we have had some relatvely warm days and so there are still a few around unfortunetly.
In summer snake bites are a real concern with working dogs (& hounds).

:D Dunkly I find it just as odd to sit in 35C heat and read hunting reports in H&H!

Yep I took Beau. He is feeling well at the moment. He had 2 gentle massages this week as he was a bit stiff from doing sliding halts in his field the other weekend and seemed fine on sat so I took him. He was getting bored of being at home & doing the same hacks and needed an outing and I thought hunting would go down better than DR! ;)
He was no worse for wear this morning so all good.

I thought he loved it last year and he definetly seemed to enjoy himself on Sunday. However he likes to be at the front, preferrably level with the field master  Once at the front he is lovely to ride but if I want to be anywhere other than at the front I'm going to have to invest in a slightly stronger bit than a french-link snaffle... ;)
