Anyone can carry one, and they're extremely useful for things like keeping hounds away from your horse's legs and opening gates as well as directing hounds. and "cracking".

agree anyone can carry one but members of the field should just use them for opening gates, most huntsman( my OH included) would not take to kindly to any tom dick or harry, whipping hounds- that should be left to hunt staff.

Agree with winterhorse.
Anyone can carry one (should be brown in colour)
Only Staff (ie Huntsman & whip should ever chatise hounds be it voice or whip)
Anyone else can use the whip to drop the lash to keep hounds away from their horses legs & that is it bar opening gates.
The reason being for this that the staff now the individual hounds, you could end up chastising a young hound/ pup new entered & it could ruin it, when the staff would just have to use their voice & it's name to sort it.
Also you will never have to crack your whip as again this is only ever done to lift hounds heads up & again that is a staff's job.

Sorry, that's what I meant by my post (with the "as well" meaning what the OP may have thought hunting whips were used for by staff). The only time I use one which involves hounds is to drop it down the side of a young horse to make hounds less likely to run under their legs as they go past on a track or lane for example.

No don't sound stupid at all. They are generally abit thinner & lighter for a ladies hand then to a gents. Good look in finding a good one. There a generally quite alot of goo ones on ebay so don't rule that out. I also got a 2nd hand one from calcutt & son (google them) I paid £50 for what turned out to be one worth £500+!!
