It has long being my contention that you don't have to wear spurs when hunting to be properly dressed. On looking up something else ('The Ten Commandments of Fox-hunting', actually) I am reminded of what the 10th Duke of Beaufort thought on the issue. This is his opinion, verbatim:
"A pair of spurs, if you think them necessary. Do not be driven by convention to wear them if you do not feel your horse needs them or, indeed, if you think you would be safer without."
Very sensible and good enough for me.
