Ive got a lovely little ISH mare to bring on who is usually ridden in a drop cheek happy mouth snaffle with lozenge, but have noticed of late shes been getting a little stronger and more feisty now her confidence has blossomed. Took her to a XC training clinic last week & definetely needed a stronger bit as I was having to heave which I hate! Taking her hunting on the 3rd for the first time & defo need a stronger bit!:)

Research brought me to the conclusion that the American Gag was the best bit for her with Tom Thumb and Waterford Jumper coming in 2nd and as potential SJ bits for her. But would love to get some opinions on these bits!:p ......Really don't want to put something overly harsh in her mouth as shes a lovely little girl & don't want her to start backing off fences and getting unhappy, just need to be able to take a pull & her to listen! I need something to make sure I have brakes, direction and ensure her head is up to get a good look at the jumps. Any other bit suggestions welcomed :D (though have already discarded a dutch gag as an option)

Grateful for any help/suggestions :)

Curious to know why you discarded the Dutch gag? I changed my boy from a snaffle to this and its been perfect for hunting..

If you want to use an american gag I would suggest one with very very short shanks. I would use Tom Thumb with roundings above american gag.
