Do hunts still come out to shoot a horse? My mare has been for sale since April and she's had the vet out three times for varying leg infections. She's worth peanuts and I cannot afford another £500 vet bill for a horse who is for sale £1000 when I've just moved house and can't afford to keep her which is the reason she's for sale in the first place!

I'm in Oldham - does the hunt still come out to shoot and remove a horse?

Regards
Em

Find the Pack which is closest to you, pick the 'phone up, and ask. Here, they will always assist where they can.

Failing that, our local Knackerman charged me £160 to take away and dispose of an old brood mare. Better that sort of figure than £500 to a Vet, with no resolve.

I'm sorry to read of your problems.

Alec.

Whoopit,

it sounds as though instead of taking the route of many, and passing her on, as may well have been the very same route by which she ended up with you, that you're taking the responsible and caring option. A huge well done. Respect from here, too!

Alec.

There are local knacker - or fallen stock as they call it now - men who will come and shoot a horse and ask you how you want it disposed of - to the kennels or cremated. Any I have had dealings with have been very professional and humane. If we need cattle to be shot, the vet doesn't do it, we send for the fallen stock man who will take the carcase away.

Thanks folks - I'm sorted. Been in touch with my local hunt and they'll come and do the deed.

"Annoyingly" after making the decision and getting organised, the horse isn't lame and has no swelling in the hind leg this morning - just tender in movement from the hip.

{sigh}
