Hi everybody. I know it sounds crazy, but my OLD mare, 24, decided she was scared silly of the cats in the barn yesterday, while i was putting her out into the field. My stables are down the back of the house and there is a driveway down there, with double wooden 6ft gates, as well as an electric fence nearer the stables to block off the driveway. Well, anyway, she spooked from the cats, landed me on my ass, jumped the fence and TROTTED up to the gates and clearned em. Think i'm schooling the wrong horses. I dont jump her anymore, but up to last year, she was happy to jump a 90cm course. I just felt that she was a bit old for jumping, but yesterday really made me think. What do you think?

Where there is a will....!!
We have some horses in our crowd in their mid twenties and one of my liveries has started her horses hunting career at 20.
Did you stop jumping her for a specific reason eg injury or just thinking it was time for her to slow down?
I certainly hope to keep mine going into their late teens, and beyond if they are still happy and physically capable of doing it.

I only stopped jumping her because i thought it was time to slow down with her. She's very slow during the summer, but gets gizzed up this time of year. Dont know much about her history, we only bought her 2 years ago, thought she was 16, turned out she was 22/23. Horse dentist put an age on her, and he always gets it right. from the little i know, i think she might have evented, as she is fairly good at dressage, and loves the jumping, both sj and xc. I'm probably a bit soft, but i think at her age, she's probably done enough, but i might be doing her an injustice. I recently joined a riding club, but havn't taken her yet. Feeling sorry for her again. I might take her after xmas, as i now feel alot better about it, because of your advice. She's really quiet to ride, my 5 year old was on her this morning. I have lessons with Laura Domencia - connected horsemanship. She trained under parelli and chris irwin, then put her own spin on it. She thinks, in all her years dealing with horses, that she's the most intelligent horse she has ever worked with, and i'm beginning to agree with her. She has whoever is about to ride her figured out before they get on. I used to find it hard to get her going, everything was in slow motion, laura got on her, and it was like looking at a different horse. She was flying around like a 3 year old. Anyway, sorry for going on, i love this website, i can talk horses all the time without boring my friends to sleep. I would quite happily talk horses all the time, so i make for very boring company for my non horsy friends. thanks for replying, at least i dont feel guilty anymore.
