My daughter and I have just been out for a hack, me on ultra reliable bombproof cob and she on Flynn who can be a bit of a wuss hacking because he's fairly green. On a B road, I noticed a van coming up behind us with yellow flights on top, flashing, and a car coming fast towards us in the other direction. I put the cob to the outside to stop the van behind - who smiled back at me - and then signalled to the other car to slow. She speeded up and came past at a heck of a speed, shouting and gesturing. I didn't think much really or react other than to think "Silly cow". I waved the van past and smiled and thanked him for his patience. Cob was perfect - as he is - and Flynn was pretty good.

We carried on and turned off into a dead end single track road. When we heard a car coming fast we pulled off the road into a farm entrance but to my horror it was the same car as previously. She speeded up again and pulled right over as close to the edge of the road as she could, spraying us and the horses with gravel and road dirt, window down this time and screaming obscenities. I considered going up to where I presumed she lived at the end of the dead end road and asking what on earth we'd done to make her so cross - when I noticed she'd only gone part of the way up the road and was turning to come back for a further go. We went into another yard and got a bit further off the road and most of the gravel missed us this time, she was still yelling. At some point although Flynn was very good considering what was going on (and she was travelling FAST and the gravel was really flying) he's trodden on himself and has a chunk of coronet missing the size of my thumbnail.

I was fairly panicky at this point because if we left the farmyard there wasn't really anywhere to protect ourselves - big ditches both sides of the road - but we had to risk it to get home and thankfully we didn't see her again.

I cannot imagine what caused her to behave like this, we didn't obstruct her in any way, she just went on the attack. To search us out and have another two goes is just madness - especially with a young child in the car.

I have reported it on the BHS site and spoken to the local police officer (who is on his day off) and warned other local riders but I'm still shocked - and bruised! What would have happened if it had just been my daughter out on Flynn I hate to think - or just me out on him I suppose.

You poor thing, that is terrible and must have been very frightening for you.

Lets just hope they find the driver and give her a good talking to. Did you get the reg?

Hope Flynns foot is better soon.

Some people are just complete and utter nut jobs, what the bloody hell did she think she was doing. Thank god you were all OK and got out of it unscathed.

Do you think you would recognise the car again? if so i would perhaps drive to the spot or houses near by and try and get the number plate.

I'm bloody fuming reading what you have wrote some people make me sick, i wish i could get a hold of the stupid B***H and make her realise she could of caused a death

Oh I have the details of the car, and the Reg Number, I was ready to take a picture but panicked a little what she'd do if she realised I'd got a camera.

We're used to nutty speeders round here - but I have never had one deliberately speed up when asked to slow down - ignore it, yes, but deliberately speed up, No.

One of the things that freaked me out was the second time she went for us had Flynn panicked and been hit by the car he would have been killed, my daughter would probably have been thrown free but her child, in the front seat, would have been killed as Flynn went through the windscreen and crushed the roof in.

Sheer madness

Thistle - excellent point about the Rescue Remedy. Horses have been praised - big cob hardly batted an eyelid and poor Flynn was excellent under the circumstances - it's not his fault he's a ginger whinger!

That is awful - did you get her reg number? what did the policeman say? It makes me so angry that these idiots on the road think it is acceptable to do this. I too have been hollered at in the past, all because a driver has to take 2 minutes out of their precious day to slow down and pass us. What a horrible, vindictive woman.

I hope you and ponios are ok.

What a shame that people are so full of hate and anger to do this. I almost feel sorry for this woman as she is obviously not happy.

What a stupid, inconsiderate, horrible, irresponsible woman! Unfortunately I doubt the police will be able to do much but if you report it properly (get an incident number, don't just have a chat with the local bobby) then they will at least go door knocking and have a little chat with this woman which will hopefully make her think twice in future.

People like this make my blood boil

You need to ensure that the Police deal with this as an incident of dangerous driving and interview the driver properly, rather than just having a word with them, which will require you to make a statement.

this driver sounds quite mad. If you or your daughter are shocked then it could amount to a recordable traffic accident, and in any case it should be recorded as such because one of thehorses has sustained an injury.

The law requires you (and the driver) to report this in person at a Police Station within 24 hours - so can I suggest you hustle down there

That horrendous! Having people do stuff like that when you are in a car is scary enough but when you are on a horse - doesnt bear thinking about. Glad you are both OK.

Agree with Mother-hen. this is dangerous driving and needs to be taken serious. Have a word with the police and see if they can push it all the way.

Hi sorry but dont just speak to an off duty policeman ring up and report it properly, had you been walking along the road and some loony did this you would assume its attempted assault or even murder if she aimed at you - wouldnt you ? so whys it any different as she was just scaring the horses, in the eyes of the law a car is a deadly weapon and she used it against you - no excuses, there was two of you so you will be taken seriously. They will at least be cautioned for dangerous driving, driving without due care and attention, I doubt they will make assault charges stick but they (i know I would) will probably caution her anyway to give her a fright and drop them later. once is careless driving, twice is dangerous but three times becomes pre meditadted and its a whole bigger ball game! the fact she turned around up a dead end to find you only ads the the circumstantial evidence.

This sounds like it is a very serious incident and the police need to take action against her to avoid her putting anyone elses life in danger.

Write down on paper everything that happened including the time date and a sketch and a description of the car and driver. Sign and date it and let the police officer have a copy of it. Ask the police officer for an incident number to ensure that it has been logged in to the system. It sounds to me that this driver is a danger to others and that she needs to be relieved of her driving licence. Possibly she even needs to be sectioned because she poses a danger to the public.

Quite possibly by the sounds of it.

Thank goodness you're both ok. But absolutley echo Mother_Hen!!

And there is this post as a record to help remind you what you have told others!

Bloody crazy and unbelievably stupid. Pity you didn't get the 'yellow lights' van's number, too. He may have been a valuable witness.

Oh my goodness. I am so glad that you and the horses all escaped relatively undamaged because it could have been an awful lot worse.

I hope that you report this madwoman in person at the police station. She sounds as if she is a total lunatic and she could easily kill someone soon if she persists with this incredibly dangerous behaviour. She doesn't sound fit to be in charge of her own child or a car.

Agree with Mother-hen and all those who have advised you to report this as a serious case of dangerous driving.

It was a very traumatising and dangerous incident and for your own sake and every other horse rider, please do make an official complaint.

Relieved you are OK. It must have been absolutely terrifying. Thank God for your calm horses.

You have spoken to an off duty police officer & really you need to report the mater properly. If you haven't made a statement to the police then nothing will be done.

You need to report the matter correctly to an on duty officer & get the incident logged onto their computers, a statement made & the get the name of the investigating officer. Even if the off duty officer actually goes & speaks to the driver again nothing will happen as there is no written record of your complaint.

This was a serious incident, she didn't just speed past you once but several times & deliberately tried spraying you with gravel. This is more a matter of assault under these circumstances rather that one of driving w/o due care etc. You need to pursue this matter to a satisfactory conclusion, you have yourself + another witness which is more than most have when incidents like this occur.

Don't let the police fob you off with 'your word against hers' (this happened to me), if they do say it's not satifactory and ask to speak to someone higher up - tell them you'll go the press. I did and in the end they spoke to the ar*e I had the misfortune to meet. Of course he denied it all but it made him firkin think cos I've seen him around and he drive a bot more considerately these days.

Oh - and silly b*tch, I hope both her kidneys fail (not that I'm at all malicious).

Aa similar incident happened to Char-Lottie and I one day when we were out on Jack and Marius but involved kids on mopeds. I made an official complaint to the police- managed to get one reg - and the police tracked the rider down, had words with him and his parents and when he refused to accept the caution they gave him an on the spot fine of £80.
Please do report this incident properly and I hope it never happens again and you are not too shaken.

Unfortunately I had an incident as well last tuesday although no way as awful as yours.I was hacking out down this narrow track and was aware of a car coming up behind me, I knew there wasn't enough room for them to pass, but new that it widened a little further up.

But no they couldn't wait and pushed through and touched my horses quarters , I could believe it , I was shocked and angry and saw in the back nearside a small infant in a car seat.
I didn't get the number and they didn't stop, i was shaking with anger.
I then went to pick up the children from school and waited on the playground for them to be left out, I overhead this woman saying that she had got stuck behind this horse earlier and wasn't prepared to wait so pushed through, she was actually laughing about it, well I saw red and marched up to this woman and said that was my horse that you had touched and I was going to report it to the local police, her reply was prove it there were no witness's and that's what the police said, whilst they didn't disbelieve me there wasn't anything they could do as I had no registration only a description of the car and no other independant witness.

Yes you guessed it her car in the car park was the same as the car that touched my horse.
he now is suffering with his back, may be connected , may not.

I hope you have more luck in taking this horrid woman to task than I did, and I am glad you are both ok, it made my blood boil reading it.

What is the basis behind these statements?

I am livid for you, do you know where she lives, i would go down to the police station and refuse to leave until they dealt with this,it is assault, no question about it, if you were some chav on an estate doing the same thing to a woman walking along the road with a pram, how would the police treat it, horses and riders are not a target for the chippy lowest common denominator on our roads it quite simply outrageous that she did this and she needs to be charged, she is lucky she isn't being charged with murder or explaining to her husband why she killed their child!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry to be harsh but this makes me see red

Well i would say reversing into her car and causing the same amount of damage as it is going to cost you to fix your horses back, is toally just and i for one recommend it - however dont get cauaght

my god what a terrible thing to have happen to you! I agree with everyone else, you really MUST make an official complaint, next time she does it someone may not be as lucky. Hope you are all ok and not too traumatised x

minerva, if I could get away with it believe me I would, I thought initially the driver was just thick and ignorant and didn't know better, the fact that she had a small infant that could have easily been hurt if he had decided to kick out and the fact that the woman then laughed about it makes me think that she is a sandwich short of a picnic, and for the sake of humanity needs putting down preferably in way that would cause her the most pain.
She is one sicko, my instructer also a parent at the school thrust in her hand a detailed way on how to pass a horse safely off the BHS website , she probably used it to wipe her ar$e with !

Grrrrr

That's awful! I'm pleased you are all (reasonably) ok.

Please report it formally. Even if the police can't take any action now, her car reg will be known, and likely her name. That way, if she does it again (to you or someone else), a prosecution will be easier.

What a psycho!!! Madness. You poor thing I would have been utterly freaked out, well done for staying calm and I hope you track her down from the reg no. and she gets what is coming to her!!!! I cant believe it x x x
