Husband won't let me buy a trailer

I'm with this . I think lorries are a total waste & always use trailers. If they were unstable they wouldn't be allowed on the roads. PLUS:D. What do you mean he won't let you, it's your money, nothing to do with him.

:). I'm not a wussy wife honest. But technically he's paid for the horse and is paying for her livery - there's no way I could afford it on my own - and he's a bit of a horse widower as well. Mostly he's very "whatever you want dear", so generally if he puts his foot down about something he gets his own way.

It's academic at present as I've not even hacked her out on my own yet (the guy who's schooling her has, but she needed some back shoes fitted before she could do any more road work - now done and I'm going to take her out today).

I'm going to talk to the YO about her transport (it's more a private yard with a couple of liveries really) first. Having seen what long term trailer hire costs a hire would seem most sensible if I was going to do it.

The Ifor single trailer is a fabulous aerodynamic spacious trailer and is totally stable and easy to tow, with visibility much better as it is narrower than the double, but the horse still has more space. I loved mine! But have a double due to needing to tow two ponies. If I had only had one horse I would have a single Ifor again.

Not sure what the differences or improvements are but the HB401 has been discontinued and replaced by the HB403

I'm not as stupid as you seem to want to make out Rog. I know quite a lot about trailer law, obviously I am not an expert like you, but it was not because of their licence restriction it was the MAM of the trailer. I don't know what they were charged with as I was never told that and it was a few years ago but I have asked my boss if he knows.

I hate trailers as a friend had to break when a car cut her up and the horse broke loose and managed go turn and get out of the back opening on a motorway. Save up for a 3.5 or 7.5 box

Paula, don't let anyone tell you that single trailers are less safe than doubles. I have posted before on this subject, and have never seen any evidence to back up these "unbalanced/unstable comments that people who have never towed a single trailer feel qualified to make.

I have had a 401 for about 4 years and towed my fairly unsettled mare in it on a regular basis until she died last month. Having started travelling quite late in life (she was 11 when I got the trailer), my girl bounced around in it at any speed below 35mph (which was a pain when I was travelling around lanes to get to local shows), constantly scraped at the floor and practically jumped up and down in her excitement to get back home for the last ten minutes or so of any journey.

The trailer never, ever felt unstable at any time, it is easy to handle alone and the stall is wider than in a double trailer, not narrower! They are brilliant trailers, so buy one - if you can find one!

Trailer/horsebox accidents are almost always caused by driver error or poor maintenance, not by the trailer itself. As I've said before though, I only have experience of the IW401, never having towed any other make.

Apologies if that is the way I came across :o

There have been so many giving out this myth that I sometimes despair !!

As for your workmate - there are many other things besides the licence that they could have been done for in regards to weight laws

The one they deffo would not get done for though is the MAM being over the manufacturers towing capacity which in itself has no legal standing although there are laws covering unsafe combinations

Do they not do 1 1/2 trailers in UK then? That's what we have to travel our 17.2hh Trakehner mare. She has plenty of room (especially height wise as we got the tallest one we could find, Hotra, a Dutch make) and enough room to get her ready inside if it's peeing down. Some single trailers I've seen do seem very narrow, so I see where your OH is coming from.
