Tried to have a nice sedate hack with my girl today and she was having none of it.

After much pranceing and pinginging we ended up cantering across the grass fields and galloping through the stubble:eek:;)

This was all her idea and she loved it. By the time we got back to the yard though she was dripping and I was almost on my knees!

What I don't understand is just why my lovely girl likes to gallop and prance with me on her back? Or any other horse does with any other rider come to that?

I can't help but think, mmmmmmm, now that can't be comfey.
Do you think they are trying to get away????

Or maybe she just anticipates that's what you want to do.
Like if you always canter on the same bit of grass everytime you hack. The horse gets ready before you do anything, if that's what you've done several times before.
All good fun though, and it doesn't last long.

My big lad won't canter on stubble, he will walk on it but that's about it... Give him a grassy track and he will go, I guess the stubble is quite scratchy

Horses have minds of their own, they play with their field mates and I think that people come into that catagory at times. Let's Play................ wheeeeeee LOL
Star is the best when it comes to ground manners, but get on her back and she's up for anything. :D It's all 'Come on, let's go'!

(However, I hate stubble fields. A friend of mine was galloping in one when the horse put his foot down a hole........... Not a good ending :( )

Ditto janette, although I also agree they do anticipate.

They are the most amazing animals and although slightly tongue in cheek I was quite genuine when I posted. What other big and powerful animal such as the horse, enjoys us just as much as they do?

I'm sorry to hear about your friends horse. We all have to be very careful where we canter/gallop as horrible accidents do happen.

I took my cob out on a hack the other day and was told I could use the stubble field to the side of the bridleway. He was being quite lazy and not really forward, however as soon as I took him into the field I could barely hold him! He flew up the field and was on his toes for the rest of the hack!
