Can anyone answer this for me? More a vet question so will be calling them too but if anyone had any dealings please let me know?
Friends bitch has a joint problem. Vet said to her that injecting hyaluronic acid into it would help her (in theory) - it is supposedly done a lot in the horses.
Has anyone heard of it or had a horse/dog done this way? Did it help?

My elderly friend has this injected each year into her arthritic knees. She gets a lot of relief from the injections.i believe she has three ,at monthly intervals.

One of my horses went suddenly extremely lame on a front leg. X-rays showed he had hardly any cartilage left in the joint. He was injected with hyaluronic acid and an anti-inflammatory. He became sound and stayed sound for several more years until ptsd for something else. I had been warned however that the results can last weeks or years. I would think it is well worth trying.

Don't think it made any difference to the dog or the horse. A cortisone injection improved the horse's arthritic hock lots and green lipped mussel helped/helps the dog.

Thank you for the info which I've passed on.

Next question
Are the injections the same as human ones and the dosage used or different please? Also was it done at normal vet or specialist?? smile emoticon

The dosage will surely depend on the size of the animal. I was left with a pack of syringes, needles and doses of the HA and told to inject the horse myself.

Intra articular? I wouldn't think many vets would be happy leaving you with a sterile procedure to do, plus it's only about 3 or 6 monthly it needs doing? I wouldn't fancy IA injecting my dog anyway :p

If you have a quick search of the papers you'll see alone it's still a bit questionable if it works (IA), and I think pretty decided if doesn't work by other routes. It's used very commonly in joint injections in combination with steroids +/- antibiotics which are effective in many cases, but obviously you can't tell if that's the HA adding to the effect of the steroid, or purely the steroid action.

My horse was injected into the knee joint. It was done at the veterinary hospital after shaving and intensive disinfection of the injection site. It certainly was a miracle cure for him.
