My vet has booked my girly in for hydrotherapy in 2 weeks for her injured leg, has anyone seen this and what is it like will be interesting to go watch, shes booked in for 2weeks.

If its in an equine spa, they get led into a narrow box, get a poo catcher put on, the door shut and then water starts to fill up the box. It's cold, salty water and bubbles around a bit like a jacuzzi. The water goes up as far as is needed to cover the injury. I've seen some amazing results from it.

Hi,

Can I ask what your horse is having hydrotherapy for. It has been recommended to me by my vet for tendon injury. Though not to have yet, but when he has had sufficient field rest.

I have been trying to research the different options on the internet. If you have time could you let me know how you get on and what you think of the results. My vet didnt specify what exactly he thought would be the best ie. spa, swimming, water tread mill etc. But we are a long way off from it at the moment.

Any info you can provide would be useful, and good luck

I am a huge believer in the effects Hydrotherapy can have on a number of different cases and have been to lectures re. it and also spoken to 2 seperate therapy centres regarding it, as I brought my horse from a centre in ireland, and my horse has had a course of treatment for a aggrivated splint.

It works well on Tendon injuries, but you get the best results at the early stages of the injury, although treatment at latter stages can be beneficial with the healing process. the temperature is so cold that at the early stages of the injury the cold temperature slows down the degeneration of the tendon caused by enzymes that effectively eat away at the tendon in the immediate aftermath of the injury. this obviously helps slow the degeneration that happens in the first 10days or so of an injury.

Later on, the temperature of the water causes the circulation to clow right down whilst being treated, then creates a rush of blood back to the area on removal from the spa. This increase in circulation encourages quicker tissue regrowth and repair, similar in concept to what magnotherapy etc is meant to do, but on a greater scale! Some of the case studies really are amazing. PM me if you want more info, I will delve around for my information etc.
