Linked to 'working the horse on bute' post below; mare is 16hh 18 yo IDxTB, first diagnosed with coffin joint DJD 13 years ago. Adequan, Hyonate and Cortaflex type supplements have kept her going over the years but her front feet have just gone pop. Last time she was this bad, about 6 years ago it took weeks of box rest and medication to get her right. This time she's no longer insured so have opted for i/v Hyonate which we know worked that time, but she's older now and after 2 * weekly shots she doesn't look much different.
Assuming cartilage is fairly thin in her feet, am I wasting my money - I understand Hyonate needs something to lubricate and without spending a fortune on XRays I'm pretty sure there's not alot there. We could put the next one straight into her feet but that's likely to be where the ££s run out.
Experiences & thoughts welcome! thanks.

My boy had Hyonate IV last year (20 year old Arab) following a field injury a year earlier, then a fall on the road - vet was convinced he had arthritis in the knee following nerve blocks and flexion tests.... my advice would be to get X-rays!!!

I wasted nearly 2K on Hyonate Injections (that was all the visits, injections etc over a 6 week period) and they made no impact whatsoever!!

I finally insisted on x-rays and lo and behold, no arthritic changes in the knee! Vet decided it must be 'soft tissue' and he came back sound after 3 months gentle walk work.

Unless you know 100% what you are treating, I think it's a very expensive gamble! I'd rather pay £300 for X-rays from experience.

There is a new drug called Tildren that is useful for navicular and bone spavin in horses. It is administered by vet via i.v and is meant to be fantastic. My horse had it for mild B.S and the difference was noticeable within a couple of weeks. I don't know whether it would be suitable in your boys case but you could always ask your vet. Another thing which might be worth trying is celery seed as a holistic approach. If you put coffin joint djd and celery seed in MSM you will see a link to a story about someone using it for their horse and you will find a number of links about this on the internet generally.
