My dog the last 2 weeks has been a bit.. Hyper?

Before I say more nothing at all has been changed in her diet or routine even.

But she's really been hyper these last few weeks and extremely playful?? All this seems to be directed at me .. Just me? I will play with her all day when I'm in and we do have little 'play fights' where she gets to mouth my hands etc.. Take her for 2/3 walks a day.

I'm wondering if she needs more dog contact? I can't afford another dog right now maybe in a few years but it's out of the question right now?

Now she isn't easy.. She has to choose which dogs she likes? I couldn't take her to a big group as she just hates being surround as it where and gets nervous? But if we meet other Dogs on walks sometimes she takes an instant dislike to them and refuses to go near them? And other times she acts a bit dominant towards them or can be playful? It's never the same. She behaves different even ifs that same dog she met before.

She was raised with another dog and I always tried to socialise her as much as possible, but she's just so strange? One minute she's happy as larry with other dogs and other times she can't get away quick enough?

Not sure what's best to do?

Age/breed/food?

Does she get any other stimulation apart from walks? Does she get a good run offlead when you're out?
Like training/brain games etc?
Is she interested in balls/toys?
Could you get her a Kong, stuff it and freeze it, get some nice big raw bones from the butchers too, to occupy her.

She's almost 4, she's a staffy and she's feed raw meat and veggies/rice and Pasta.

When walking its mostly off lead, a few times a week I will take her in the field and give her a massive run with her ball.

Don't really do any training, she loves toys and balls and she plays with them quite a lot I try to play with her as much as I can or she normally entertains herself.

She does get bones once or twice a week but I tend not to give her to many as she's a bit of a good doer and gets fat easy.

Each to their own but she probably does not need the rice and pasta, that will put weight on her and is a bulker-upper, much more than bones :)
I use two balls for my young dog, so I only throw one when he brings the other back so that takes the edge off him.
You could look into clicker training and teaching her tricks and things like object distinction, make her think a bit.

I shall lend you Dex- they can wear each other out!!

Maybe change in season/weather? spring in the air?

Clicker training is great for wearing em out mentally.

ETS have just resorted to chucking Dex a bone after the 8000 round of hide the ballie!!

As you can see she likes to entertain herself :D

You say you "play with her" meaning she could indeed associate you as her play pal, does anyone else play with her quite as much as you? my OH (is a firm believer) in training, that a hyper/excitable dog should never be encourages to be hyper/excitable, does that make sense?:p. If he is working with a dog (he trains a little different to me) but gets very good results and is much much more patient than me:o he will not use exciting exercise, instead he will walk further, cycle (more structured), and avoids the whole go to the field and "clip lead off" and let dog hoon, he won't encourage that at all, at home he would give a more stimulating distraction (large raw bone) to munch on or ignore until settles esp if been walked, as for most the dog is attention seeking and getting desired result if play/attention is given. We do differ but he gets very good results in calming said dog.

Thats really interesting Cayla, Dex calmed down massively at home when I discovered the field and he could Hoon (probs because I could not walk him on lead for 6 hours a day lol)- got round the unclip lead thing by either not and just dropping it or having a ball and throwing it behind me!! Can see what you are saying though- you dont want em to practise hyper behaviour ever really- same with any bad behaviour.
Bones are seriously the way forward.....! :D

Mine is whining really annoyingly because I have not allowed him to break a 'down' for the last half hour :p

Agree cycling is great for them too, it is control as well as exercise, they have to keep up, they have to speed up and slow down when you do etc.

AAAANNNDD he has just rolled upside down and gone up a whiny octave.... :p
I have to say if I didn't make him lie down on a spot he would spend all night trotting up and down. My mother calls him Twinkletoes....

Awww bless floofy twinkletoes!! Dex finally gave in to lay by the radiator after his bone.... thankfully no more hide the ballie for me!

That does make a lot of sense, yeah it is just me that plays with her as I'm around the most.

Hoping in the summer to take her for walks in the park, gets to muddy in winter :( I would love to take her to the yard but the YOs dog isnt friendly..

I try not to encourage her silly behaviour but I won't lie some times I can't help myself :o
