Has anyone come across this?

One of my daughter's horses was competing at his last event of the season this weekend. After warming up for the dressage her horse ( a 5 year old)began hyperventilating ie. panting quickly. (He has been competing all season and no problems). She walked him round then did her test - again he emerged in the same state. She had a break then warmed up for the show jumping - jumped well but again the same - also after his show jumping round although no problems with his jumping. He then had a break of about an hour before going cross country. She thought about withdrawing him but he seemed fine after a relatively short rest . She went steadily round the cross country - no problems - a nice clear then he recovered quite quickly.

It was a humid day but otherwise not obvious reason for this. Anyone any ideas - he is now on his break so if this recurs early next year during the fittening process we thought we would get his heart and lungs checked. Meanwhile we are watching him carefully.
No scare stories please
