If you could choose a stallion for my mare, who would you choose...

pics (mostly the bad uns as those are the most fun to upload) can be found at http://s38.photobucket.com/albums/e131/louiselamb/Porridge/

Am seriously thinking of keeping her and breeding something perfect for me. I would prefer a British stallion. I would like a 16.2hh+, well sprung, decent jumping sane type

Well, with your love of greys, Cevin Z immediately springs to mind!! He's a grand chap to be around (he was at Catherston when I was there). Can't think of any other grey in the UK atm - it's too late. Think I might have to go to bed........ I'll think on in my sleep for you. Who was her foal by that she had years ago? Do you know? Do you know what it's doing?

I love Cezin Z, I really hope I can use him on Lottie in 2009! I think he's supposed to have a fab temperament.

Otherwise, prehaps Talan or one of Pennie Cornish's stallions http://greenacresequestrian.co.uk/talan.htm Think they all have fab temperaments, and she takes them on hacking lesons with kids on ponies.

Also like this chap http://www.meadowstud.com/24.html but he is only young, but a grey and tall

Just out of interest why are you prefering to use a british stallion?

[/ QUOTE ]

Quite simply because I think we need to boost the British breeding scene as much as possible

My mare has fab lines and if she produced a superstar (I can hope...) it would be nice for it to have been part of a British partnership.

Weezy you know who I am going to suggest........

I would adore a Geneve baby, and I love his short coupledness (sp?!), however am not entirely sure he and P would throw the best baby - she has short front legs, a short neck and is slightly croup high - what do you think?

Thanks for all of the other suggestions, lots to think about

I know I want something that has stock down and ridden away so I can have an idea of what they are throwing and how much of the stallion they are taking through with them

Thought about Handel and Randi but not sure they would want P throwing his stock

Although her lines are certainly good enough...

REALLY interested in Crown - especially because there is some Iberian blood in there

I think that you and me are very similar in the way we ride and I have been banned from ever buying any of the slightly heavier warmbloods ever again, I just can't ride them and something a lot more forward going suits me better. So if you want to keep the foal I would look for a stallion that is more lightweight and forward than the traditional WB type. The more modern WB - ie not the one that won the World SJ champs but the type of any of the other 3 that were in the final.

I absolutely 100% agree with everything you have said

Some Selle Francais lines are better as they are almost 100% TB and lighter framed, but I do need the height too. I would like a BWB or Irish or even maybe a TB cross - I just don't know. I do love Crown tho. Any ideas as to what would be ideal are gratefully received!

Oooh - just looked at your mare's pedigree and she has an Arab/Shagya-Arab line, through Czardas!

Sorry - totally irrelevant to this thread, really, but I don't know much about big grey show-jumping stallions....

I totally agree about the SF comment, I sent my traditional Irish mare to a SF (Sire of Marcolas G, Fox Champ) as he would inject a bit more 'quality' into the mix but he's also got a trainable temp, unlike my Mare who is a bit of a hot head. I used the Gustavii's in Sussex and they were just excellent. They have a lovely range of stallions and I personally think that Balou Mena would be perfect for P! He is stunning in the flesh and they think he will go all the way....

Have a lookie:
http://www.gustavii.com

They are super reasonable regarding costs too, and they really know how to get a jumper. In 2005 they were ranked about 10th best show jumping breeders in the world, for a small husband and wife team I think that is pretty impressive! I can't recommend them enough

Both Cevin Z and Vechta were at New Piory Stud for a while and Caroline would never have anything in her yard that was not both talented and of good temperament so I think that should be a good recommendation. The same goes for Cevin Z when he was at Catherston as Jennie has the same attitude and Vechta always managed to combine competition and studwork when he went back to Donal and William.
