My desk was always hideously messy. But I’m very organised, pay bills on time and don’t fidget. So it doesn’t necessarily go hand in hand.

Of course not.

Always paid all my bills but my dad used to call me perpetual motion! Concentration?? What’s that ?

O.....K...... would it help you if you considered whether your boredom is possibly related to a less than typical brain wiring? It certainly helps me, but it doesn't help everyone, so I won't mention it again unless you want.

Random thought but someone I know whose horse has retired through injury last year has started volunteering with her local RDA & is finding it really rewarding. She's also been able to have the odd ride on their horses to school / exercise them. Might be more "feel good" than rescue work / less chance of falling in love & wanting to bring anyone home!

Untidy desk ..... bored .... hated school...... I'm sensing a theme here ....... do you fidget a lot, forget to pay your credit card bill, have trouble concentrating on one thing at a time ? ?
What’s the theme? I’m a hopeless case?!
Of course not.

What about setting up a little part time business from home? Browband making, rug repairs/rewaterproofing, or something non horsey (like crochet blankets etc). Something that could break even, maybe a little profit to put back towards the horse expenses? You can work your own hours and be at home for your dog.

However fortunate or otherwise other people may think you are, if you're unhappy and unfulfilled it can over time it can still be very difficult.

I'd actually really struggle if I lost my riding horse, without knowing if I could have another - so much of your identity and lifestyle is tied up with 'being' a horsey person, especially if you haven't made the conscience devision to step away from it.

I often tell my OH I'd love to give up work & have him finance me and the horse but I think the reality after being independent, can be very different.

If you were to start working part time, could you then finance your own horse again?

I didn't want to read and run though @Starzaan - you've shown incredible bravery & I hope everything works out for you. Wishing you all the very best of luck.

Oh I forgot about the world of arts and crafts. During my stint I made OH a stunning Christmas stocking, did some painting, adult coloring books, and some cross-stitch. I didn't make it to knitting though, and I'm still wanting to learn that. I can really keep myself entertained when not working. Maybe from being an only child, I don't know ?

I'm a lot older than you are but I do identify that "lost and bored" feeling when you can't ride (for whatever reason). However, I think you sometimes just have to think outside of the box. Following Rose being injured, I have managed to find a horse to ride three times each week, I do a couple of equipilates classes and I walk the dog at least once a day, twice if it fits around riding etc. What has turned out to be a complete godsend is joining an art class. I've never done anything remotely creative but I love it and having fallen over and broken my wrist I can still paint. Just give something a go, new classes start in all sorts of things in January. I'm with a group of women, who like me, are all beginners. We have a lot of fun and in 12 weeks, I'm pretty astounded at how much we have all improved!

Pistolpete - I completely hear you. I have been out of work for a while now for one reason or another and except for the days when I do a bit of freelance horsey stuff, my day consists of doing two horses. I usually ride at least once per day but with the best will in the world this only takes me until lunchtime . I have lost two of my horses this year and am down to owning just the one and the thought of losing him terrifies me as I am not in the position to have another yet and the horses really do keep me going. I am trying to be productive and revise for my HGV theory as I plan on taking that in the early part of the year and then crack on with learning how to drive one!

Maybe set yourself some little goals each day? Then you will have something to focus on. And as others have said if you can afford to and are thinking of getting another horse than there is no time like the present with you having so much free time! What a great position to be in!

Sorry to hear about what has happened Starzaan. Is there any way you could loan the horses out or look for a sharer until you can ride again?

thank you Spottypony. Some smaller goals is a great idea. I really do think I need another horse in my life just not sure how and when that’s going to happen.

I do a lot of things in the garden when the weather is nice, or I will tidy up a section of the yard or something - it’s always a nice feeling when you feel like you have achieved something however small with your day. I too would love another horse in my life… like I said I am not in a position too yet but hopefully I may be later next year.

Volunteer, horse sanctuaries are always looking for help. Fundraising, mucking out, painting fences, sweeping the yard, filling haynets the list is endless and that's before training the animals.
