I’ve been away for a bit from the forum but wanted to share, in the hope that it gives someone a giggle (or serves as a lesson in what not to do, or to never trust a Shetland ?.

Towards the end of last year, I was bringing in my four as usual, I open stable doors, open field gates, everyone walks in calmly, I close doors, end of story.

until this particular day...... One of the mini shetties decides he wants to stand outside the stable, whilst his bestie and my larger mini x go in, I go to close their door with my legs blocking the gap, out darts the smallest mini (28 inches), ducks through my legs and makes a break for it..... promptly taking me off my feet......(I’m 5ft 8 and 11 stone) I’m now face down, backwards on my a 28inch mini, looking at his bum as he canters down the barn, can’t get my legs down as i Appear to be frozen and my feet are level with his head, while I’m thinking “oh crap this isn’t going to end well” I’m also thinking it’s a really comfy canter? , I’ve got a small bucket with treats in, in my left hand, which is rattling furiously, so his buddy joins the race, the door is still open to the field, so I’m thinking it’s good night Vienna for me, if we end up racing around the field.

After what seemed like forever (in reality just 50ft) the rattling treats obviously become too much temptation , he skids to a stop, head down and almost neatly places me back on my feet, with him and his buddy both calm as anything, noses up asking for treats. ?. I was absolutely beside myself worrying he been injured, it just goes to show that they are made of tough stuff (But I wouldn’t recommend riding them!) ?.

Anyone else any amusing tales? Don’t have to be limited to shetlands plotting our demise ?.

Edited to add a photo of him (on the left).

My OH tells a lovely story about her childhood pony. She was 12 and the pony a 14hh Welsh cross. She was in his field visiting with him, wearing a pair of plimsolls. He quietly put his front hoof right on the side of one of her plimsolls, just on the rubber bit then gave her a big nudge so she fell over then ran off with his nose almost on the ground, waving his head from side to side, clearly laughing at his hilarious joke.

Thanks for sharing …i was LOL all the way through - thats hilarious and would be video gold, if caught on camera!

“so I’m thinking it’s good night Vienna for me” made me howl ??

Those shetties are tougher than they look!

I once rode a large one when young and light….it hadnt been ridden in years…neighbours lawnmower. I lasted 20 seconds in the saddle as it careered off bucking down the sloped field before launching me into a huge patch of nettles!! ?

That's absolutely hilarious! ? I was thinking how on earth could you accidentally ride a pony?! What a shame you didn't get it on film, would have been brilliant to put on YouTube. ?

Did something very similar a few years ago, only (mercifully) I was at least facing the right way. He tanked off with me (following his friend) for a good half mile before he pulled up and I could safely bail. I had only a lead rope in my hand, so no control at all. In my mind all I could hear was the ghostly echo of a pony club instructor shouting "sit up, Sit up!!"

Likewise pony (all 9hh of him) was absolutely fine, if a little out of breath. I was mortified.

Brilliant.

My story is... vet arrived early and the horse was at the top of the field. One problem, the bull was lying asleep against the gate. No time to move the bull so I climbed over the gate and put my leg over him aiming to hop over him. He got up as I was in mid air and for a moment I was actually sititng on him. It was very funny, luckily he was a very good-natured bull.

Many moons ago (I was about 10), a friend and I were out hacking our 13.2 ponies through some woods. My pony decided to stop as we were going under a semi fallen tree to do his business, so I sat up and rested my arms on the tree and said pony took off leaving me hanging from the tree. Friend shot off in pursuit of my pony and brought him back. We vowed not to tell our parents as we thought they'd never trust us out alone again. Still brings a smile now.

OMG, I definitely wouldn’t be brave enough to climb over a bull! ?

I rode on the back of a ram once. Was walking the dogs through our field which had a little group of rams in it at the time, had the dogs on leads, one of the rams took a dislike to the dogs and ran over to head-but them, knocked my feet from under me, and carried me on his back for a few strides. It was very flat and quite springy.
