I have always said I hate off road running and I hate mud.... so what I was thinking of entering a very muddy very hilly 5k run today I have no idea! I was planning just to take Millie the mad lurcher but Marty was bouncing around like an eejit in the morning insisting he wanted to come too so I took them both (Amy and Flick, being sensible, had a Sunday lie-in on my bed!)

Marty was a bit overwhelmed by all the dogs and people, and stuck close to my side doing that lovely greyhound leaning thing. Millie thought it was absolutely wonderful, so much fun, so many people to bounce towards! We set off and they were both pulling like trains...

Got as far as some woods, I stepped off the path to let faster runners go past, Millie backed out of her collar and she was off..... 🙄 I think she pretty much overtook the whole field (I kept getting comments from other runners at the finish ‘oh she overtook me, she is so fast!’) - I tried calling until another lovely canicrosser told me not to worry, it happens, and someone would catch her. A mile or so later I found her with a lovely lady marshal who had grabbed her! So we did the final mile or so together, and I took away a learning point that she will be kitted out with a harness, and probably a padlock and chain, before we try again 😂

It was a really tough run which would have been so much easier if Millie has been pulling me along, but we really enjoyed it & will definitely be trying again once she is kitted out properly 😊

Off to re-size photos to add...52577889_10157832655464587_123237480899018752_o.jpg52974603_10157832655404587_7848222971528216576_o.jpg

I am amazed how much I liked it MoC 😊 I am looking at my trail shoes now wondering what on earth to do with them... I think they will be scrubbed under the outside tap.... Marty is proper tired whereas Millie is just pretending and will bounce into action at the drop of a hat!

Good stuff! When Trev runs with anyone that’s not me he has one line to his collar and one line to his harness (longer one to collar!) as his recall to strangers is sketchy. I’m sure you could fit a Houdini strap to a cani cross harness for those pointy sighthound faces where a collar isn’t 100% . It really does happen everywhere- at my last big race the person before mes clip failed on the start and off hoones his pair! Luckily one of the two had recall as it’s a pretty intense start line there with 30 second interval starts!

Not ideal for canicross but I know a couple of people that use these on escapees (I'm amazed they let you run them in just collars at a canicross event 🤔 ) https://indi-dog.co.uk/20mm-houdini-harness-escape-proof-dog The greyhounds and lurchers that run with us tend to run in second skin harnesses.

It wasn't a proper canicross event Vallin, it was the Hillside Brewery 5k charity run :) It just happened you could run with dogs as well :) I've e-mailed Emily at K9 Trail Time with measurements and weight, so I'm hoping she can recommend something - she is at Evesham next weekend so if needs be I'll pop up there for a fitting :)

Great stuff! Dogs look like they enjyed themselves! Emily at K9 Trailtime will keep you right! If she's likely to back out of a harness you can get ones fitted with a belly strap to make it more difficult. My pals little GSP can get out of most harnesses (quite hilarious to see, she's got it perfected, one swift move & she's gone) but the zero DC has defeated her :-) xx

Ah that's good news EMS - she is just a typical bloody lurcher and always wants to be going faster than everyone else :D It's a shame she was caught really, she would definitely have been first home for our running club :p

How do I find beginners canicross events now? I've got a couple of friends who do it so I've asked to join the local group on FB, but I don't want to be doing serious stuff just fun stuff because I can't run fast enough!

A lot of Facebook groups organize social runs, so normally fairly laidback for folk of all abilities. As for events, they often have short/novices courses so that might be a good place to start.

yes fb canix area groups are very helpful and ours lets people try different gear :)
