I turned both ours out this morning into a different field (the wood field). One that we don't normally use except in the summer, but we can't get water to the normal field as everything is frozen solid, and the wodd field has a pebbly stream so they could get some water. It was -1 degrees C.

They dragged me there, and when I let them off they shot off like two very shooty off things, and proceded to tear about for 10 mins.

Meanwhile the dog and I investigated the frozen bits of the stream. When we came back onto the flat bit of the field the boys were still

tearing about... I called Tom over and took his rug off, Ron shied at me and they started all over again! I couldn't catch Ron so had to go and get a carrot as bribery! When I eventually caught him I took his rug off too.

Tom isn't clipped (but is a fairy) and Ron is hunter clipped (but isn't a fairy). I left them naked for a good 2 hours.

They both came in 2 hours later steaming and very pleased with themselves! Tom looks a lot better for a roll without a rug on - though the snow really doesn't look better for it! Ron has obviously stood and rubbed on a tree for 20 minutes as his mane was one giant knot by his withers!

Aww it was -15.5 where i am this morning, horses still stuck in stables as yard is now an ice rink ontop of the 1ft of snow!! Fun times continue im just glad my boy doesnt go too crazy being locked up!

Ours have been free to come and go up to this point... the yard leads straight into two fields and we've not been able to shut the gates as they were snowed in. The yard isn't too bad as Dad's kept it pretty clear then salted it. The biggest problem has been the water. The stable taps ahve been ok up until Friday, when it was -20 here overnight and now everything is frozen solid, except the stream.

Sounds like they loved that!

We can get across the yard to the paddocks but have to be very careful - yesterday a lorry on the yard let it's air brakes off just as I was walking Manni past and he jumped a mile on the ice! Eeek!

There is no water available in the paddocks as the troughs are frozen - but he's only out for about 3 hours and I have been adding hot water to the bucket in his stable, so hopefully he's getting enough.

As relatively new pony owners (4 months!) we were very brave and chucked Dolly out all naked and nudey on Saturday!

She was feeling quite energetic in the morning and seems a run around in the snow did her the world of good!!! Got daughter some good pics too!!

Brrrrrrrrr! Made me feel chilly watching her though!

I bet they loved it! I feel a bit sorry for horses that spend the whole winter swathed in rugs, never able to have a naked roll or a good scratch.

Jack really really needs clipping again - but I'm not sure I can be bothered with the bitchy comments I'll get for doing it at the moment. (We have indoor school :-), so his workload has not really changed).

Soon as I take my boys rug off he has a good bite/itch/scratch, I bet they loved that roll in the snow being a 'real' horse..

ahhh I bet they loved it. I took the little welshies rug off today for an hour so he could have a roll as although it was very cold it was lovely and sunny and the mud was all frozen so he couldnt get dirty.

My mare is out 24/7 clipped and fully rugged with a snuggy turnout hood on and the only reason I bring her in every day for an hour or so is to get her HW and hood off and put a nice lightweight stable rug on. I sure it must be uncomfortable for them to have the same rug on all the time and it must be lovely to roll and gallop rug free for a while

I did exactly the same with ours at the weekend. They'd been in so much. I put them out for 3 hours without rugs, and they charged round like mad things, rolled for ages, gleefully itching their backs, and then groomed each other in the sun - something they've not been able to do since summer (groom properly). They came in in such better moods!
