I want a cob as i think they are beautiful and trustwothy.

A'friend' has told me that cobs are safe and reliable 'plods' and ' dopes on a rope'

I find this offensive to be honest, if a cob wants to throw a stop then you would have a real problem trying to sort it out, i feel it belittles my riding skills.

I have been riding for 20 years, and some of the best horses i have rode and jumped have been cobs.
I will not be offended by your comments...........i just want the truth, are cOBS ' SAFE PLODS'?
 
I dont think you can stereotype horses, i have met some very sane throughbreds that are safe and ploddy and you could let your nan ride i have also met some virtually unrideable ones, the same with cobs have met some real dope on a rope types and others there is no way way i would want to sit on.
I would just ignore your 'friend'
 
What a silly comment to make. She obviously doesn't know much about cobs then! (Not saying I do at all, just saying I know enough not to make that completely untrue comment LOL)
Get her on a heavy hunter then see what she says.

I have very little to say to people with that attitude, it gets on my nerves a bit tbh. Chloe is a cob, but she is by far the hardest horse I have had to ride on the flat and on 'outings' , although the easiest one to jump at home, because she loves it so much! We are still having 'issues' with our level of calm at outings, but I have accepted she will never be a plod, and tbh I don't want her to be!
 
Same as any other horse, you get quiet ones, you get lunatics. I have one of each, both Section Ds.

Just smile sweetly (whilst mentally sticking two fingers up) at your friend and get on with choosing a cob with the sort of character you want. ENJOY!
 
Makes you wonder where the saying "Got a right Cob on" comes from. If they really were all 'plods' then you wouldnt have that saying about someone/thing having a strop!!

ive got a lightwieght cob who came from lyn russel (ment to be a show cob but jumps field to field and runs hes wieght off!)who is def not a plod hes won open xc fastest time showjumped upto 3.3 unaff and dose intermediate pony club eventing and jumps anything your brave/stupid enough to ride at out hunting he is deff not a plod! i think it just depends on the horse!
 
My sisters first horse was a cob who went to HOYS was the masters horse and evented to novice and pony clubbed. He was the most clever horse we have ever had and knew straight away who the experienced/not so experienced riders were. If you knew your stuff he would stick his head up in the air and p*** off with you at the sight of a dressage board, good as gold for novices even did a few para dressage tests! Like wendys horse he actually kept himself light by charging around from field to field and would jump ANY type of fencing -inc ditch to hedges, barbed wire and the highest electric tape you can buy- we loved him!
 
I think cobs may be a little safer in the way as they aren't quite so nimble and quick as finer sorts so their 'spook' is easier to sit to and being wider usually helps. But I lost a lot of confidence on a cob I owned a few years ago who used to spin round and bolt on the road and now I have a cob who is nappy and walks backwards or bucks when tapped with the whip - I wouldn't call him safe either. Cobs do seem to be very strong-willed, stubborn and actually very intellligent (well, mine have been anyway) and I do sometimes wonder whether I would feel safer on something else.
 
She should have tried riding my cob on a pleasure ride today!! There is nothing ploddy about her, she will only go in front - if she isn't in front she will do anything in her power to be, and she is so nimble, how I managed to sit on some of her spooks, I will never know!
 
Watch the show cobs.. umm dont think there is anything ploddy about them... I would definately have one if I could have another horse!! Maybe your friend is saying that their temperament is good for many people and they are honest horses, but like any horse, they have their days!
 
Have to say that the one we saw at a Hunter Trials today was far from being an innocent plod, was a real stroppy little so and so.

I'm sure you get all different personality types. Get what you want and enjoy !

YOUR FRIEND SHOULD COME AND RIDE MINE IN TRAFFIC AND HACK IT OUT ALONE!! she is as sharp as a TB and if she decided to go with that neck set there isn't alot you can do!! you cannot bully her into doing anything and have to be polite and tactful with her, she will however hunt all day has an amazing pop in her and can turn a hoof to most things, so i live with her being a spooky sod to hack alone and if i do roadwork i go with another sensible horse!

What does yoru "friend know"? Cobs are worth their weight in gold which is why they are fetching so much money these days! They are usually fun all rounders that can turn their hooves to most things and can carry nearly any member of a family. They are good doers, forgiving types and real people horses. TBH I don't know of many "dope on a rope" cobs - they are intelligent and fun loving, but usually safe and reliable.
 
Our old coloured pony cob was a real superstar. Well schooled, nimble, intellegent and won some brill jumping classes including Hickstead and Pony of the Year - far from a dope on a rope!
 
nah no dopes, some are but then some thoroughbreds are like that!

I have known cobs who are fantastic in the jumping ring, extremely careful and certainly not easy or slow!

Dont be offended by what people say, everyone has their favourite "type", I love clevelands and Irish X types, but doesnt mean I hate cobs.
 
Dope on a rope ive not ridden a cob yet you can describe as that !!!!! I would do yourself and a favor and ignore that comment, every type of horse has different way within them

It all depends on the individual, like any other horse, I've had arabs that could be classed as "dopes on ropes" it's a personality trait rather than a breed/type trait I think. The only thing that limits any horse to do a specific job is their physical ability.......... and their mindset.
 
All the cobs I have owned have been safe and reliable.

As being dopes on ropes I would not agree as they are sensible enough to keep themselves out of trouble.
 
my cob x is as safe as anything with everything except me hacking him out, when he turns mental. he works during the week and likes to let his hair down with me.

apart from that he is a dream ploddy cob, unless you press the right buttons in which case he can turn his hand to anything
