I am starting to get really into dressage with my newest horse(mainly because he's a shitebag when jumping, seriously, how scary are poles and fillers?!) I need to know what dressage girth is best to use, i have no idea yet what size. but i dont mind a 'waffle' girth, but would much prefer a leather one. obviously in black. what makes are best, and whats elastic centre ? i have only ever jumped in my life so dressage is very new, but enjoyable as i've got a lot less bottle than i used to when it comes to getting a large, scared horse over anything raised!!

You should keep an eye on ebay, i managed to get a beautiful black leather dressage girth (2nd hand) which is lovely and supple for £3!
It's just a plain leather one but is very nice. Does the job well :)

You need a girth that is 20inch shorter than the satandard girth as a rough rule for dressage girths. Professionals choice are excellent at the top end of the synthetics market and Hy are good at the lower end. If you prefer leather then Baines, Stubben and Mark Todd are good and ebay is your friend!

My saddler said Fairfax girths are fantastic and do make a difference, but PRICEY. He said after that he would personally go for the plastic Wintec, which is what we have.

I'd avoid anything elasticated, and I have been thinking of getting a sheepskin sleeve for my girth - if it's good enough for Charlotte ;)

I have the Albion Ultima one - it was expensive, but it's the humane kind and my sensitive mare is perfectly OK with it. Think you can get them for £99 on ebay - it's expensive, but I've had it many years now and it will basically last us forever. I am thinking about getting the same one again for my new horse. After cleaning, it comes up looking new, every time.

My saddler recommended Professional choice and I have to say I really like it (having always been a leather girl). Horse goes well in it and it is wearing well and doesn't break the bank at £70 ish

I prefer something with a little elastic in though it must be central or at both ends (I liken it to me wearing a pair of jeans to jog in, how blooming uncomfortable it must be to have no give when breathing and flexing).

It depends on the horse. My TB likes the buckles low and she is in an ebay bought Albion leather girth. The ISH has a very forward girth groove, high withers and no shoulder. When we had low buckles she kept catching her elbows, was getting very sore in the girth area and the saddle was always being pulled forward. She has a Professionals Choice neoprene one which is as physically long as will fit and because it doesn't slip forward she is girthed further back, which keeps the saddle in place.

Have you got a dressage saddle with long girth straps? Some dressage saddles have short straps on them so you would just use your normal girth.

I am a fan of Fairfax and Amerigo Protector with Wintec coming in close behind for dressage girths. I fit them so that the buckles are well above the elbows. You will need to check with the length of your saddle cloth as you won't want the buckles sitting just below the bottom of it in case you get pinching.

pricey as they are, if they fit your horses shape...the Fairfax do work.

Fig has much more shoulder freedom and Goofy stopped being a fart to girth up after only 2 days with the Fairfax so will be sticking with it.

try ebay, pre loved or BD FB page-normally go for £150/160 which is a BIG drop from new.
