Went for a lovely hack today, mainly walking and trotting on the road and a bit of a canter before cooling off by walking home. Both horses are chaser clipped tbs, they are in at night and out in the day. It was fairly cold today. Got home, untacked and (as I was too lazy to muck out this morning) turned out without rugs for 1/2 an hour so they could have a roll/scratch/buck and gallop if they wanted while I mucked out. Lady from next door arrived and I went to say hello (very experienced horsey lady) and one of the first things she said was "Isn't that horse cold without a rug?"..

They had only been out ten minutes! Yes he probably was a little chilly but I think it's good for them to be rugless even for a short period each day to roll and generally blow the dust off. I can't believe that someone would make a judgement on me like that- as if I intended to leave them out overnight like that or something? Why would you even comment? It's not like they look poor or I ever leave them without huge piles of hay in the field.

Oh, and I even used a hi-vis exercise sheet when I was out so :p

at least the lady showed concern for the horse. alot of people (even some horsey ones) would turn a blind eye to a none rugged up horse that had been out for weeks in the snow. i dont think she would have been trying to be cruel or accusing you of anything, by the sound of it she was probably just showing concern. i wouldnt worry to much about it to be honest. i agree i do try to "air" mine off when it is not raining or snowing to let them have a scratch and a roll and probably a good gallop round for 10 mins to an hour.
i hope you set her straight though? some people that have had years of experience sometimes think they are right about everything (not all i have to point out) just some. but you know what your horse likes and it will not do any harm to let the air get to him for a bit. :) x

Lol bless the lady.. my 2 babies are unrugged, and my tb gets her rugs taken off every day to go out for a few mins and have a scratch and a roll. Today it was nice and sunny, i didnt have my coat on most of the time. But if it was raining i wouldnt've!
x

Whilst I do agree with that, I have been there for 3 months and my horses have always been rugged so I would have thought it would be obvious to her that I was aware of the fact. Maybe I'm just being a grump :(

People are stupid. Me too apparently... I went to check friend/ owner of my shares girls up in the top field today, they are living out in many acres of hilly land with natural shelter and water and plenty of grass. They are rugged in medium weights (gets chilly up there) and get bucket feeds regularly.

I politely said hello to an old man walking up the hill parallel to me and off he goes having a massive go at me because they should be in a stable over winter! Said he grew up on a farm (probably about 70 years ago) and all the horses were always stabled and it's not right for them to be out in this weather with no proper shelter (there is an actual small wood there!) Stupid old git. He was too deaf to hear my response too which didn't help. They're not even my horses! Said he could see them standing by the gate from his house. Yep, coz that's where their bucket feeds come from. When i went up they were grazing in a little dip in the ground.

Made me so angry and upset to be spoken to like that. Should have told him to pee off, but some of us are polite i guess ;)

How comes I never get any of these irriates to play with?? Not fair :(

Me neither;) Everybody knows I am a foreigner, therefore I am forgiven for doing very odd things, they are used to me!

:eek:Mrs Mozart! You are cruel and heartless for ................. fill in the space as appropriate;)

Actually to stand in defense of the other lady - think of it from her view. She didn't know you were only intending to let your horses air for a short while. All she saw was 2 clipped horses, on a cold day, un rugged. And as you have said, she doesn't know you well enough to know what your experience level is. I would have said something!

I did this with my cob, but he has a high blanket clip, OH thought I was going to leave him all night. I was doing the same as you and mucking out. Thought he'd love a roll and things nude:eek:!! The big wimp stood at the gate wanting to come in!!! I know TB's that are harder than him. :D

Well I think he would have a heart attack if he saw my old mare.

This was taken yesterday morning when it was something like -8 and No we DONT have snow! Its just frost thats formed on her back and because she is SO well insulated it doesnt melt. She's 3/4 TB and 1/4 exmoor and by 'eck that 1/4 provides her with a good coat!

I take rugs off most mornings or afternoons for 1/2 hour while I poo pick. They ALWAYS have a good groom, roll and play.

Obviously evil and heartless too.

thats what i mean about SOME people that have owned horses for a long time. they think they know whats best for horses when in fact if the horses are happy why bring them in?! as long as they are no neglected and warm enough what is the problem x
